I've been toying with the backhoe idea for a few years. Hard to say how much I'd actually put it to work though. There's some top backhoe operators near me who seem to keep them busy enough but even they switched to mecalacs now, makes me think that for someone like me who'd be fairly mediocre in comparison at operating them there uses might be limited vs just taking 3 tonners to a job. Your BILs is a nice looking machine though

Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

Obviously nowhere near as many about anymore, but I wonder on whether there is an opportunity 🤔

Yeah a good thread. Have read most of it prior. Someone on there said along the lines of you either need enough work to keep a tight and decent but ££ backhoe busy as they aren't a machine that likes to sit around in the wet, or you buy something older that won't get used much but when you do need it you can probably guarantee there will be an ensuing headache coming your way- pretty much sums up how i think about it ATM

Despite the still impressive world sales . I think the Back hoe has had its day as a machine for every site . It’s been hammered by faster midi diggers and big mini diggers that weren’t around so much 30 years ago . It will become like the track shovel . Still with a place in the construction industry but more of a specialist tool that has its place for certain jobs and good operators for them will be in demand just like track shovel operators .
Just my opinion though !

Mine went last year. I can hire one with a driver locally for less than I used to go out for.

I grew up on a backhoe and the only machine I love driving but when it's not paying you have to draw the line.

Yep that was my problem, having to dig on site with the front bucket up in the air etc was not ideal! That said it’s surprising where you can go and what you can do when you put your mind into it!

You’re right,with the correct mindset you can tackle pretty much anything,not always quite as quickly as a dedicated machine but team a backhoe with a 3 ton mini and the versatility is pretty much endless with no transport issues.In the last ten years I have undertaken all manner and size of jobs in some horrendous ground conditions all with nice end results.This would’nt suit all contractors for sure but it keeps us busy with happy repeat clients and makes the job more interesting at times.

It came down to cost for me, 6ton with tilty and used 10meter telehandler was cheaper than a new 3cx.. and I needed both bits of kit!

Perfect set up for long term jobs where you are’nt constantly moving sites.New 3cx prices are heavy for sure.

There are quite a few couples round here in the sticks , escaping persecution I guess.
None I know drive backhoes.
