Can anyone date this?

Bought this from the dad of one of previous apprentices a few years ago. He was a toolaholic and had to sell up when he was terminally ill. I bought a lot of crap off him, but this one one of the gems. Apparently 1946-1998? Just treated it to a cheap vice, and the guard is on the way from amazon (as the H&S man keeps twisting his knickers about it) Passed its PAT recently. Tool for life this one. I wonder how many owners its had and how much it cost new.

Fobco Star -- got one here - early '60,s .. good little drill .. just stripped and sorted this one ... wants a.n.other coat of Hammer finish - shame about the table damage

I really like the build quality of old tools. I grew up with a 230v powered hacksaw of similar vintage. When my Grandfather died in the 90s my Uncle had it shipped up to Aberdeen. He died a few years ago so I dread to think where it is now.

probably a Rapidor Manchester ... great little saws

or maybe a Qualters and Smith

both 6" capacity ..... Q&S also made an 8" ... or possibly a Wicksteed - they made several variations

I recall it had a blade coolant recirc system.. Looked more like the second one.. Had rectangular push buttons for stop start, and had auto stop feature on it ( pressed the off button with an adjustable rod) I think it may have had a compound angle setting, but I may just be mis remembering the facts after 26 years of playing with wood saws since.

Think I paid £60 for this one - but makes up for some of the lemons that came with it. All in a good cause though.

gave 50 quid for the one I have here, but had to make it a few bits and totally strip it ..
was in a mess ...
must get it a couple of knobs for the quill handle ...
it was one of those too good to leave jobs ...
sat on the floor in a box ATM ...
ought to put it on a bench and use it ...
be handy for pilot holes - save swapping drills all the time

I have a Meddings Pacera #2 MT with an unmarked table that I use regularly with a VFD driving it...
much bigger throat and a lot more solid than the little Star

as it arrived ..

sounds like a Q&S with the square push buttons and auto off mechanism you describe or could well have been it's successor, the Sawmaster 6" Terrier that had round buttons in a square plastic bezels and a lever on the bow pivot to knock it off after it'd lifted itself back up

the older 6" Q&S just shut itself off at bottom of stroke

or could be configured to lift and shut off too (ditto the 8" version)
eight inch one was a 6" on steroids

ditto the 8" Sawmaster Bulldog

have owned several of each over the years, including a few Rapidors

used to have a bank of three Paceras on one base in work ... kept different sizes in each .. was very handy

this is a 5 bank with one missing ..................................................................................................................................... and a pic of a 3 bank base with one missing also with bigger 5/8" heads

and a bank of 6 #3 MT Herberts

didn't use the donkey saws much .... were alright for multiple repetitive cutting,

two 8" Sawmasters and a 6" Q&S 'retired' / awaiting new homes ................................................................................ and a beast of an Ajax

but slow compared to bandsaws ...

and for really 'lumpy' lumps ... Mr Noble & Mr Lund's 39" dia hydraulic cold saw would chew through it in some order 32" x 16" cap.

if you can find an old Buck & Hickman catalogue, they used to be agents for Fobco

couple more drills from my old place ... Ajax #4 MT power-fed quill ....................................................... and #5MT K&W 7ft radial ... drill a 3.5" hole

My dads got a very similar one, if I remember correctly you can change the belts around on it? He doesn’t really use it anymore but still won’t let me have it, got to be one his most prized possessions after his lawnmower

I’d like to get my hands on another. I grew up with one in the workshop which I was trained to use at the age of 9ish.. then when my Grandfather died in 97 my uncle shot gunned it and had it shipped upto Aberdeen. He died a few years ago so no idea where it’s gone. Maybe my cousin has it, but I’ve not met him since the late 80s !
