Buying a new machine

Hi.

After all the advice and information on here, as well as other research I've done, I'm deciding to buy a machine new on finance. I've come across to many dodgy people selling stuff and the last thing I want is to have to spend a lot of money fixing something.

I now know that something around 1.8ton will work for me long term. I will need to get an 8 tonner for a week initially, to shift the bulk of the earth and then all the other stuff will be straight forward with a 1.8.

The brands that I've priced up so far are:
Carter
Yanmar
Bobcat
Volvo

I was initially told that Carter was Chinese. However, I spoke with the main distributor for the UK and he said they were only put together in China and not one part is Chinese. It has a Yanmar engine and he also started rattling off other brand names for parts, that I haven't got a clue about. The machines are mostly used in Australia and New Zealand and he's trying to build up a business here. I'm not sure if the actual saving on this machine is worth it though.
The Volvo EC18 E Cabbed was £18500.
Tha Yanmar was around £17500. He told me verbally over the phone, so this could be more.
The Bobcat E17 is £16950.

I'm going to find more dealers for different brands and work it all out after.

Any advice on what I should steer clear from?

Pick a brand on it's aftercare and warranty, not on price. I'd sod Carter off before you start, yes they might be made of mainstream components but should a oddball part fail you'll be pissed as f**k, and no disrespect but you don't have the expertise to track down a random part or have one made.

Sany Did do 5 year warranty and where cheap as chips for what they where! But that's 3 years ago and I've a feeling the price will of gone up....

Get your warranty and run with it on whatever you buy.....

Not wanting to start a debate on makes and their virtues or otherwise but JCB do excellent finance plans apparently must be worth a look.

I'll give Carter a miss then because, yes I have 0 expertise and experience and would be really pissed off if something like that happened.

Ive tried a few more dealers today, but most are closed, I'll have to try Monday. I haven't come across Sany before, so I'll have a look. I'll give JCB a try Monday.

Yeah, the Bobcat states this: Finance Package - 0% Finance over 5 years, with zero deposit, subject to acceptance. Warranty - 12 months standard, can be extended to 3 years / 3000 hours for £500.

If they're still doing 5 years 0%, snap it up! When I bought mine a few months back, 3 years warranty was standard. Talk to them about extending the warranty to five years.

If your local Bobcat dealer don't want to play ball, call Bobcat of London.

When I looked at Sany for a 2.5t, they were the same prices as some of the big brands. I told the rep he was having a laugh.

There is the answer then.

At Plantworx when TDL first tried pushing they where very well priced!, 13t was a good deal and to be honest I should of looked at buying one.

But once the price goes up to within a couple grand of a known make, theres no point.... Don't see many Kato's for that reason

I know MD Plant and dealt with him on my kubota. Nothing wrong with him but I would be hard pushed to buy either a Carter or Sany.

they're a Chinese manufacturer who've been trying to break into the markets for some time ..... and were initially much cheaper .... (and you get what you pay for) ... I believe they've pretty much caught up on prices these days .. and am led to believe improved their products greatly too -- IIRC even Rory was considering buying one .... however .. as you're planning on keeping this long term you're going to be much better off sticking with 'main stream', known, established producers of 'known quantity' products IMHDO .... as said the other night ... the new route'd be my choice all day, especially with free finance

I will stay away from them. At the moment the Bobcat looks the best deal with 5 years 0% and I’ll hopefully be able to get 5 years warranty. A few people have said that Bobcat doesn’t make good excavators, so I’m unsure.

that's fine if you've a dealer in town/the locality .....
they'm a bloody long way from the UK, with very limited dealerships established here. 95% of spares would NOT be 'off the shelf' and 'back order' can take mooooooonths .......

as you say "BACK UP is the " problem ....

they could well be "one of the largest manufacturers of construction and handling equipment in the world" and not export a single nut and bolt ... they've an 18.59% of the total world population market to sell to .... 1.433783686 BILLION people

The tb216 is a pretty crap machine imho. Gutless and very vague slew. My Hyundai is twice the machine in the dig. Not been without its a problems however.

90% sure I'm going to take what ever the hit is on it and sell it start of the year.
It's had two hydraulic pump leaks, bonnet latch only last month is useable although still temperamental on whether it will lock/unlock, it's had both king pins, boom and ram pins replaced and yet still has an odd knocking when reaching out to tip a bucket or when pulling ground at reach/depth. Lately the pump has started making an odd noise every now and again.

This is all with the grand total of just shy of 180 hours on it

Never had a breaker on it and is greased every day of use regardless if only a couple of hours use the day before

Is that on an e10?

My e10 has done 1300hours hard work and not missed a beat, bar 2 hoses blow.

It too gets greased everyday and serviced every 150hours.

Ive also got a dx19 which isnt a bad thing and another dx10 but as you know thats currently having a noise investigation
