What would happen if you ran heating oil instead of red diesel? Is there an additive that could be added to make it work?

can't you just pump from one to the other Dave ??
what were that outfit quoting for red?
might be more 'astute' to acquire this/next year's m/c fuel cheap ?
have to see if I can't rake some more 45s together ;)
Great suggestion Graham (y)
Pumping for me from tank to tank is not an option - main tanks are at the front of the house.
Whilst the site for the 'new' temporary 2500 will be behind my barn about 120m away.
And I don't want to spot my stock of MDPE to do it :p
Have just secured some more empty 45g barrels for transferring and storage of more red
We have 4 machines here running on red so don't use much over the year.
But have just had an on line quote from HomeFuels Direct.
Delivery to here in NE Essex is coming in at 40ppl + 5% VAT = 42ppl
So once my barrels are ready I'll order 600 litres.
This will go into 3 x barrels strapped to a nice euro pallet.
My fuel store is some old Anderson Shelter curved sheets on a concrete base.
It's away from all my plant and stuff and can just fork it in there :ROFLMAO:

We have been on oil heating for nearly 4 decades now :p
So have been following price reductions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic....
....unable to get through to our regular supplier by phone, email or website
Our new bonded tank is 7/10 full after a recent order.
So I suggested to SWMBO that I be permitted to site the old 2500 tank out the front.
What she said is not repeatable
The old steel 300gall tank is still lurking up the side of the house on brick piers etc.
So have just ordered 1500 litres of Kerosene at 18.9ppl + VAT = £299.09 from HomeFuels Direct.
A neighbour recommenced them for daily pricing with a nice graph on the website.
Will update y'all how the delivery goes on/about 5 May 2020
And I thought I was stealing some oil at 29.9ppl 2 weeks ago!

So you'll understand that I do not feel guilty when I tell you that in March we had 1000 litres of kero delivered at 49ppl inc :ROFLMAO:
This 1500 litre order will save me £436 😇

pays to store drums under cover and ideally not level/on a bit of a slope ... away from their bungs any standing water will get in the bungs when they 'barrel' as they warm and cool :(

Yep know what you mean - a few years ago we had a barrel of creosote rust out and let in the water on the top
These day my barrels are all under cover and tendered with loving care :giggle:

my oil guy saved me a LOT of bucks on me last kero delivery by telling me to wait a week .... like 15p/ltr ... sub 30p a litre ... will give him a call tomorrow and see what red is ..... and whether his is FAME free ... could hold 1000 ltrs easily and'd last me a loooong time ATM

I find the fame carry on ok but i get additive put in (works out at 1p per litre) but im using it fast enough. I don't know how long the additive will keep it good for.

We get the red with additive, Shell GTL I think it’s called? Couple of pence extra, but better if long term storage. Sadly a recent 3000L delivery was mistakenly ordered as standard🤦‍♂️, so we will see what it stores like, it’s being used, but not that rapidly at the moment.

it sounds like a right PITA ...... red used to store fine for years

Not really that much of a pain i get exocet gas oil conditioner put in. Supplier puts it in when they deliver fuel. Simple enough. I believe it can then store for up to 2 years.

I paid 57p for red over 12months ago.. why hasn’t red dropped as much as all other fuel? 🤷‍♂️

I was just pondering the same Q ...... probably being kept artificially high through existing stocks

red could used to be kept with no issues for 10+ years with no degradation whatsoever
