Auctions?

Are there any auctions out there now that are honest and worth going to/bidding on. My old man and I went to bicker bar machinery auction on Saturday, with the intention of buying something if it was even half decent..... after an hours drive we got there, looked around it......absolute garbage, the one picture on the website looked "decent" needed a bit of work but would make one, sort of picture, hence we were very interested. What was there was a neglected heap of sh!t that wasn't worth above scrap value, but someone who wasn't paying attention would buy thinking it was a bargain.
Now I'm in my late 40's but even I can clearly remember the days of farm/plant auctions where the stuff was just honest used equipment. and it was listed honestly.

Couple years ago I went to local farm auction to get some heras fencing that was listed for sale . Stuff was rough but would do me for the job I required for it . I was there at 10am and waited til after 5 for it too come up . Bundle of 30 sold for more than new price . I’d waited all day in the pissing rain . I’ve not been back since .

I'd say even up to year before covid they were ok but since it's all gone online it's seem to have mysteriously pushed prices up.
Often wonder who "buys" this crap and what they do with it...

farm sales always been the same for all the Giles,s trying to outbid each other on utter sh1t .... last one I went to some time ago .. waited all day for a genny, only to find my immediate neighbour across the fields was also interested .. we tossed for it, he won and had a seeerious bargain stole it .... only one of the day .... he's never run the damned thing :mad: 25kva open framed with a 4 pot perky

machine auctions (live ones) are a thing of the past ... been many moons since the last I went to ...... pair of Indians turned up with a suitcase full of cash and bought EVERYTHING!! .... have had some fabulous buys over the years though

I still like a good farm/collective sale and have done OK on little bits at most of them but I tend to treat it as a day out more than anything.
The last 2 I went to I got a sheep weighing crate, fully working but a bit tatty for 40 quid, an adjustable top link for a fiver, a home made, very solid telehandler man crate (I use it for logs, takes about 2 cube) for 15 quid and the lightest set of 3pl forks (perfect to adapt to my mini loader) I've ever seen, for £100. Oh and 2 boxes of 1 litre tins of Massey ferguson industrial yellow for a fiver 👍
A few years ago I won a tidy penman trailer for 400, paid for it and while I was waiting to have it loaded I sold it for 600, never actually laid a hand on it! Still wish I'd kept it though 😆
Some things go mad though- timber, gates, fencing seem to go for nearly as much as new and untested chainsaws go for fortunes!

When I was last at Cambridge sales they've changed the small auctions to online timed auctions- so you can't bid and collect the same day! Means you can't buy a 'bargain' and chuck it on the trailer that day, so if you're a bit of a drive away it'll cost you a lot more than just the auction price, seems daft to me.
It's a great place to have a sit in a massive range of machines in one place though 👍

I often wonder if there’s ever any genuine “bargains” with the masses of online auctions, like one ends that not a lot of people have found.
I had a bit of an ebay bargain last week, got a tidy but needs a few little bits, massey ferguson 203 tractor for the opening bid of £1350! Basically an mf35 with a few extras, for less than half the price.
I'd post some pictures but I don't seem to be able to at the moment, I think it's my phone..

Local auction place to me just sells old tat and stolen shed contents, has a monthly plant section, which is just stolen Stihl saws and afew companies put in part ex crap! I don’t go to it. I only buy from RB or euro, and go through everything with fine tooth comb!

I punish myself by buying stuff from watts auction I’ve now got more than in ifor trailer load of stuff to go back that wasn’t worth buying on the smaller stuff you think would be handy etc. Just need to make time to enter it an upcoming sale. Working on about 30% success rate lol

Don’t they have to indemnify auction items though? Had some decent bits from RB when it was at Donington, haven’t been to new place. Best Purchase was a £1200 pipe freezing machine for £80 😉

they generally charge an 'indemnity fee' which gets lumped into contributing for their indemnity insurance (plus significant profit, I'd guess) ... how often do they have to use it ??????

That's exactly how we treat it now, it's nice to spend a day with my dad (75) and my lad (10) so it's a generational outing for the day, my lad normally try's to get his poppa to buy him something he wants lol. it's just frustrating that they ( auction companies ) can't list stuff honestly anymore.

Bought this today from auction for jobs like this, to keep mixer supplied and wash out. Save filling 25litre drums every morning and lugging them about. Got a little Honda 1” pump I might fit to it.
