I contacted the seller of the New Holland and the machine has been sold.

This is over budget, but I am wondering if the hours on the side-dash are 2000odd (which I guess would make it a very decent price if genuine) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-JCB...928184?hash=item44740f2eb8:g:ICQAAOSwYxFf0lsq. I've asked the question.

also... I'm not particularly attracted to this, but it is literally 20mins down the road from me. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JCB-3CX-...056844?hash=item1cfebfa54c:g:IW8AAOSwZ9ZgBVye

Thoughts?

I'm going to get in before the Druid slobbers all over the screen prophesising how Johnny Barnes is god :ROFLMAO:

First machine is tidy, low hours. Front edge points to it doing a lot of load out work. Possibly a ex council machine or similar IMHO. Tidy, i'd say it should be a 18k machine personally, BUT Barnes can add 2k for being a dealer that doesn't sell s**t. Likely will have a warranty too for the asking.

Second machine, i'd avoid..... be a 10k digger if it wasn't a JCB. That said it looks to be more paint that makes it off putting than the look of it's mechanics. In fairness it is strait. If you do look check the doors and cab for rust.

As for the metric/imperial thing.... fk it, 3mm comes of easily with the grinder and 45mm rolls off nice.

Any recommendations on where to look, other than eBay and Plant Trader?

Forget plant trader, utter waste of time.

Facebook surprisingly does turn out nice finds often.

Council.... that would be reassuring on genuine hours. Would of thought the maintenance would of been done to.

Could have been a rough 2000 hrs mind looking at lack of paint on bottom of boom and i think the back end has had a lick of black paint. Rest of it does look tidy mind

Yes, and this is where it becomes less reassuring with council machines.

Sometimes they are loved... one council worker with too much time, polish and the steam cleaner..... I know of a Daf 45 Gritter lorry that survived into the 2010's with zero rust as the lad who drove it used to steam clean and wax oil it every month in the winter..... it then got written off in a ditch apparently :ROFLMAO:

John's not God Rory....just an honest bloke to deal with who constantly amazes me with where he finds his stuff... having personally known him well over 30 odd years, I'm always happy to recommend folks to at least give him a try and see what he's got about him.

Just out of interest, trickiness aside - what sort of weight can you put on the tines with a 3CX?

I've been looking at 90's models (by body shape... series 3 I guess)... have to admit, I know little about them, so looking for any advise on what to avoid.

Manual boxes, shuttle boxes - not 100% on what to look for there. Also Project 8 and Project 12.... unsure on what those terms mean.

Any advise greatly appreciated to avoid buying the wrong thing.

Budget £15k, VAT not an issue.

Thanks.
Hi. I own a 1997 3CX. I bought it about 6 years ago in order to always have a machine on our farm site whilst I was doing some barn conversions. It has been an excellent machine, very versatile. I paid around £14500 from recollection. I was like you, I didnt really have a clue other than what I tried to read up on. I was looking for a little while then one came up locally at a good price. I got a chap who owned one locally to come and look at it with me and try it out. He gave it the thumbs up, then when payment was done, drove it back to my place. (I bunged him a few notes for his assistance). I then slowly sussed out how to use the machine, having just hired tracked machines previously.

Mine is the manual box i.e. big gear lever, not powershift. Its pretty standard but I chose one with the 'extra dig' (extending rear hoe). I would highly recommend this, the extra reach is great. I also added front pallet forks. Its a great all rounder, digging holes, dredging, shift piles of materials, but I've also lifted steels into place, unloaded pallets, pushed in fencing posts, used the front clam jaw to carry tree trunks and so on. My main gripes are, shifting pallets is very hard as you cant see the forks due to the front bucket, so its a careful process but this not really what its for, just a bonus that can you get you out a situation if needed. The other one is the weight. These are far less capable off road than a tracked machine. If its wet clay ground, like where I am, they really churn it up and quickly get stuck and you either make a worse mess digging itself out or have to get towed out. I dont know if they came with a locking diff as an extra, but mine doesn't have one and so you just end up stuck spinning one wheel. Ive learned not to go on the fields from Oct through to late spring!

In terms of running it Ive had very few issues. The engine has been great (perkins from what i can remember). Fuel filter needs cleaning regularly (might be my dirty red diesel tho) but its frugal on diesel and will work ok on near tickover. My gear box always feels a bit clunky and seems to resists going into gear a little, maybe normal or perhaps theres a wear issue. I grease regularly and whilst I have done filters etc, I tend to get a cheap local agri engineer to come and give it a going over one a year.

The pins are all a bit more worn than I would like so its a bit loose, but thats not too dissimilar to the driver! so check the play on all moving parts and judge what you can tolerate for what you want it for. Mine has blown a couple of fuses for no apparent reasons but i suspect the wiring looms are probably worn in places, likewise Ive changed the odd hose. Other than that, they are pretty solid, basic machines and very much jack of all trades.

Parts are easy to get. Genuine JCB are pricey but loads of stuff secondhand, inc buckets etc. I dont have a quick hitch, so I always curse faffing about changing buckets so intend on getting one oneday. Overall, I think if you can get someone who has one to give any potential purchase a quick test for you, you cant go too far wrong. They seems to really hold their value too. Best of luck

I think its rated at 1000kg, but I have lifted a full pallet of plasterboard which is about 1700kg! It lifts but the front tyres distort, goes very light on the rear (use rear hoe to counter balance) and is tricky to manoeuvre. It was move by machine or every sheet by hand, hence the choice.

The forks, have you tried lifting the arms a bit, fully tipping the bucket, then open the 4 in 1 to support the forks? You`ll get a bit more visibility under the bucket, granted the bonnet will still hinder your sight line on some thing narrow.

A lot of other makes have a diff lock, I`ve never seen one on a 3cx, you have to get the feel for it and use the independent brakes.
Surprising what you can get out off, with a combination of drive and back end and/or front end.

This is the way to see what you're doing with forks on a 3cx
