Yup, it's actually synthesised from natural gas, hence why the price has shot up and availability has been patchy.

It’s certainly temperature sensitive for a start, I don’t think it expires as such but if the air gets to it, it will crystallise in the empty void of the container. Not so much of an issue with an ibc as you draw from the bottom but worth knowing if you transfer it from one to an empty can and then into the machine. I’m pretty sure it’s the transfer from clean to whatever else, that causes a lot of the issues with adblue for people. It needs to be kept so clean and hence why a lot of firms just run smaller cans of it now rather than ibc’s etc

Best kept below 30 C for long term storage, and it’ll not be likely to freeze in many parts of the UK. We’ve found that it starts to freeze at about -12, at -15 or thereabouts it’ll be solid (The makers say it freezes at -11). If you keep the same container for transferring it you’ll not have too many problems. If you get crystallisation, slosh the Adblue about and it’ll dissolve. If you need to wash crystals off anything, distilled water does it every time. You absolutely can’t put Adblue in a container that’s had anything else, including tap water, in it unless you’re looking for issues.

I use an IBC about every five months and when it’s empty there’s virtually no crystallisation left inside. No temperature control, just kept out of the sunlight.

I get crystals in the car tank every two years (flags an error on the dash).
I suck out all that I can, rinse twice with tap water (I've got very good tap water) and refill with fresh fluid.

I only use small quantities (20l), but I always buy from the bowser at a truck stop to get fresh rather than containers that may have been sitting around for some time.

With all due respect your tap water may be clean, but it isn’t clean enough. The water used to make Adblue is more refined than de-ionised water for a battery. Also, what container are you using when you buy the Adblue? We’ve been running multiple machines on Adblue for three years and never had crystallisation inside a tank, even when a machine has been stood for a few months. How do you know you’ve got crystals in the tank? A few around the filler aren’t worth worrying about.

what container are you using when you buy the Adblue?

I'm reusing 10l AdBlue containers.

How do you know you’ve got crystals in the tank?

Just going by the dash / ODB11 error
