Hey folks I'm totally new to the site so apologies if I post in the wrong location or don't t observe the correct equitate!
I own an 87/88 3cx and the back actor is leaking oil in all directions(the king pin is shot and there are multiple other issues)
She starts on the button and i'd like to keep using her as a loader. Is it possibly chain up the back actor and keep using the macbine?? I tried bypassing the entire backhoe by getting a pipe and disconnecting the main pipes to and from the oil tank and using the pipe to join the ends but this has not worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Again im a first timer and no mechanic so please be gentle!!

you could remove the feed and return to the main hoe valve block and simply connect them together, which is essentially what occurs in the architecture of the main valve/spool block, with oil pressure being bled off to what ever motion is selected (as a rough description) ..... you will obviously need to secure the back hoe before doing so ... do you have the boom lock still on the machine to keep the boom raised for travel ?
you'd also need to secure the extra-dig extender, to prevent it sliding down/out and probably an idea to secure the dipper to the main boom

you can see the boom lock here on mine - has 3 positions for L/R and central stowage - drops over the post on the top of the king post casting and can be secured with a pin through the post ... dropping the bucket off and securing it to the right side should give you easier access to the valve /spool block ... don't forget to cap the ports in the spool block to keep the dirt out

forgot to say ... the hydra-clamps holding the king post are inevitably going to let go eventually as pressure drops/bleeds off, leaving the king post hanging loosely on the 4 securing bolts ... one could possibly tighten these up to replace the lost ram travel in the hydra-clamps to secure it to the back frame ... supporting the boom/king post assembly in correct position before trying that'd be a good idea

Hey V8druid thanks for the reply. I apologise in advance for the stupid questions but I really am a rookie! Boom lock is long gone but im confident of keeping the arm off the ground with chain. I thought the extra dig worked on a separate pump?? Is that possible?? What is the dipper and what are the hydra clamps please?? Where would i find the feed and return for the main hoe?? What i have done so far is disconnect a pipe approx1. 5"diameter and the return from the valve block to each other. When I start her up the main arm is trying to push down causing the engine to cut out. I can't stop the arm from forcing downwords while the engine is running butwhen she turns off/cuts out i can release the pressure with the

Looking at the lock plate, the pin holding the plate out of the way has fallen out a few times already, what leaks do you have exactly?

Hey mick. There's oil running out of the bottom of the king pin as well as several leaks on the actual hydraulic rams themselves. Id appreciate any suggestions

Is it likely to be just hose damage or are the ram seals leaking or damaged?

Does the back hoe work enough to open it all out and hang it about a meter above the ground, put the legs down lift the wheel off about a foot. Stop the engine see what drops and what leaks! Pics if you can.

No unfortunately shes well past that stage. Ram seals are leaking and kingpin is spilling oil everywhere. Also there's a long term leak in the valve chest that has allowed the back hoe to drop on the main ram for years. At this stage im really hoping to bypass the backhoe and use her as a loader. I know its possible as ive seen a few over the years but ive no idea how to do it??

Take the backhoe off, blank all of the lines at the valve block and bolt a counterweight on. Be a better ride and better visibility as well.

or just take the P & T off the valve block and join them to each other ;) secure the legs up and take the hoe off as you suggest (y)

Pressure feed from the pump to the block and Tank return from the valve block ...
blank off the open P & T block ports to keep the tish out ...
that block has a decent value.
Joining the P&T together will allow the pump to simply free flow the oil that was going to the block (which is what happens in the valve block when nothing is being operated)
