5/6 tonners

Got a 3 and a 5 ton and 3 don't get used much at all as 5 has tilty and does 3 ton work and also up to 8 ton work

More than 1 way to skin a cat. I must admit I’d se my 5 tonner a lot more if it wasn’t having to pay for haulage. If it’s just a few days I just think sod it take the 3 tonner and save agro of waiting and paying for haulage.

We have just placed order for new 55u hitachi and will be coming tilty ready due to the hitachi/engcon collaboration where hitachi will fit hitch and control system at their headquarters by their own fitters

Got our own beaver tail lorry so not an issue
Local plant hire firm to us has 5/6/8 tonners hitachis all running 3cx buckets so you are moving same amount only reason hiring bigger than 5 ton is for lifting or digging rocky ground out

An 8t Hitachi on a 3cx bucket is an absolute waste of time time money and energy
They are well capable of handling a bucket twice the size
They are considerably bigger than other 8t on the market

Out of interest would you not be better going 8 ton as haulage is the same.
If you have your capable 3 ton already, then likely the 5 ton will be used for bulkier digs in which case must as well have 8ton? I have a 3 and 5 ton, but would prefer a 3t and 8t to cover covers all bases better... 5 is still too small sometimes.

I have 1.5t/3t/8t and am looking at adding 5.5t with tiltrotator next year, my excuse to the mrs is because many a time i need to take 8t and 3t and could manage ok with something in between pfffff can never have enough diggers....it goes on and on

The u55-4 is a kubota isn't it ??

Yes sorry I was thinking 55u for a hitachi there's not much between the kx57 and the u55 the cabs a little smaller and it's slightly less stable I like the u48 for its size but it'll never be a 8t

That could backfire- she’ll make you sell your 8 and 3t if your not carefull
I bet all of us on here could find a pretty good reason to have a digger in just about any size category!

Also you need a stronger bucket than a 3cx.

Yeah my comment was probably a bit rash, Nowt wrong with the build quality just there cordless stuff doesn’t tolerate dampness at all, I’ve lost 2 to the damp but Makita stuff seems far more tolerant.

Makita cordless seems to love water I've lost count of how many times I've half submerged mine to repair a damaged clay pipe etc

Same here, always found the 5 ton to big and unhandy for 3 tonner work but not big enough to do 8 tonner work
