I can’t believe what money 3cx’s are making at auctions still, my first 3cx was a p12 S reg, sold it in 2005 and they are still making exactly the same money at Leeds last week as when I sold it, amazing really!
Quantitative easing at its best, the government devaluing the pound to make the dept look not so bad 😳

I like cake
As the numbers of older ones dwindle the prices go up.
We sold 50 odd backhoes last year was incredible, a lot less around this year through

Well obviously the cab is a different colour! Not entirely sure exactly whats changed but some have a better rear axel (known as a big hub) and the grey cabs were deemed to be the best backhoe JCB have made. The cabs suffer from rot much worse than the black cabs, but that doesnt seem to have happened to that one.

Yeah there doesn't seem to be much rust on it. It would probably look a lot better after a good steam clean.

Spent a lot of hours sitting on the wheel arch of one. Would have to be turbo if there was a choice but at the age they are now you may be better picking by condition. Doubt you'd be gonna road one far an

People mention turbos. From memory it made little difference. Better on the hills and pushing. My 180 hasn't got a torbo on it and you can't stop it. I've being doing a fair bit of research on them now, very interesting

Well been to look at it today. Bit disappointed really not as good and tight as i was hoping. You would probably say worn out. Think engine transmission is good. But most of the pins and bushes are worn. One 2' buchet. £6500 .
Not sure what to do

I think the grey cabs were the first with servo hydraulics on the backhoe. I remember going from a black to a grey cab and the rear end was a lot lighter to operate over a day, but bouncier and less precise.

Ther turbos had a slightly wider bucket, and performed far better on the front end when loading tippers.

What man as done, man can do, what never has, maybe
The grey cabs had weaker springs in backackter spools 👍 very light on the levers but could be prone to sticking 😳

Cheers paul. When you say sticking does that mean the arm keeps moving when you let go of leaver

Price is pretty good for the condition its in, whats got the play in it? Everything? Or mainly the kingpost slew? Is the front bucket in good nick? People had a habit of wearing the jaw out scraping roads and then the bucket never closes fully. Whats the interior like?
Whats the motivation behind buying it? To put it to work or just always fancied one. If its the latter then you have time to gradually sort bits out and it looks like it would make a good base for a project.

Its generally got wear in everything. The front bucket does shut tight but plenty of wear. The interior is quite good all the stickers are there. All electric stuff works.
As to why i want one, god knows. I used to operate these back in the day so kind op reliving my youth. Wouldn't want to work it my thinking is just tidy it up a bit and keep as an investment. My other 180 is 1986 and is fairly tight especially the front end.

To be fair there of an age now i would think you'd be lucky to find one without a bit of slack in pins. At 10k hours I'd expect a fair bit anyway unless exceptionally well looked after which will be rare as at that age most will have been through many owners.
