3.5t trailer help

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and a genuine beginner.

I am looking at trailers and wondering about the 3500kg towing capacity of any towing vehicle listed as capable of towing 3500kg, it seems most that are capable of 3500kg require a braked trailer, my 2017 L405 Range Rover states "trailer with over run brakes" in Land Rovers datasheets. Are trailer over-run brakes the same as braked trailers?

Firstly, do all "plant trailers" already have brakes as I see most vehicles (including 7.5t tippers) still require a braked trailer "if" towing over 750kg?

Secondly, the reason I would like a trailer is to truck a Volvo E27D excavator about. The manufacturer literalure states that the E27D transport weight is 2,715kg. This leaves a trailer weight of 785kg, I have not seen many sub 800kg trailers.
Isn't the point of a 2.7t excavator to be towable, is Volvo not thinking straight or are there trailers available weighing sub 785kg?

Ifor Williams GH1054 is what you need.
Pretty much any trailer over 750kg has brakes (overrun brakes in most instances in the UK).

Most 2.7t machines you will be on or over the limit

You have to remember that only Europe has 3500kg as trailer limit and only UK has such strict lorry rules. Therefore on a global scale when designing a digger the are concessions made for our rules but probably not a priority. That being said as above there are 3500kg trailers that will work for you and go as light as 500kg.

You'll probably be overweight in reality if your taking buckets and a hitch onboard too- but as said ifor 1054 will be about as close as you'll get it and I reckon we're all running overweight

So, the GH106 is just a tad wider, same length and a tad longer, but 50kg heavier being 710kg vs 660kg of the GH1054.

If I see a used GH106, would you guys suggest avoid at all costs? Or put buckets in the boot of car perhaps?

I think if most on here are being honest they would just get on with it. If you start getting that pedantic you could get well over 50kg of mud hung on the bottom of it

Don’t worry about 50kg - you’ll be carrying that in mud/fuel/butties/wallet.

So no points if towing heavy I guess and the likelihood of being caught a tad heavy is zero to non

Any trailers plated over 750kg max weight have to have brakes, doesn't matter if loaded or if the trailers empty weight is sub 750kg

Any sub 3.5t trailers are over run brakes

Depends how much you want to spend on a trailer gh1054bt has a 2.82 ish payload, if you want to spend another 1k+ the alumax has a 2.91t payload

And the police are understaffed and seemingly blind.
Rare round here to see a trailer with a full a compliment of lights and a number plate, not uncommon for machines to be moved without straps.
As long as your lights work, you have a number plate,tread on your tires and couple of straps you will be beating 80% of trailers on the road.

Transport weight usually includes the ditching bucket and sometimes a quick hitch. And noseweight doesn't count remember

I have a gh106 and unless you really want to be able to put something 6ft wide in it- I put classic tractors in mine- I'd get the gh1054.
I find the extra width really noticeable on country roads/roads with lines of parked cars, even though its not actualy a huge amount wider than my lm146 flatbed. Left side wheels and tyres are always getting a hammering from the edges of country roads

Doesn't count as in if say 150kg is "transferred" to the towing vehicle then you could have 3650kg in the trailer? What happens if they ask you to unhitch and weigh it?
