When the disco is done I would like to get a tipper or big panel van that can tow a minimum of 2.5 ton. I was thinking about a jap van but the one i looked at could only tow 2 ton and they dont look very crashable, not that I make a habit of doing that.
I would love a defender hi cap but i just know it would get stolen as soon as I park it on the mainland. Who made the best 3.5 ton van twenty years ago? ford, merc, iveco?
It must be rwd because i dont like removing fwd gearboxes.

Transit mk6/7 are 2250kg
Sprinter w903 are 2000kg
Iveco are 2800kg (unless you get the c class which is upto 3500kg)

There are rarities to the standard.

I'd still go iveco. Sprinters are great for towing of that era but just shite on plated weight...if they'd do 2.5t legally I'd say sprinter.

Any 20 year old tipper needs to be bought in condition - they will all be rust buckets.
You will not find a better engine for towing than the 3l Iveco - at that age you are probably looking at the 35C14 (140hp). It is a torque monster - way better than anything current.

Electrical gremlins....

Post 08..... Isuzu grafter as a tipper, Merc sprinter as a van.
2008 isn't a model year change on them, nor a face-lift.

I can't say I've had any more or less electrical issues over any of the 7 I've had and I've still got 3. 2010, 2014 and 2020. The ones I've not got any more are the 2002 x2, 2006 x2.

I know the 2002 i converted to a plant lorry is still going that was a 2.8 engine and it was on its way back from the moon when I had it.

They are a solid truck regardless.

I had a couple of electrical issues on two 2005 3l Iveco’s, and they were really difficult to diagnose. Brilliant when they worked though!

My 2009 2.3 iveco is seriously impressive after a remap. Unbelievable how it will hang on in a gear towing 3.5t uphill.
