Seems to me general excavation work will earn general money. More value added that can be added will increase this.

To give you an example, there is a gang local (2 + labourer) that will set the building out, dig it, pour conc, get it to DPC and build the block and beam. All ready for the brikkies to crack on. They do it on a price and If i had to break it down to an hours rate I would say £200ph. They are booked out until June next year.

Obviously we wouldnt use them as its too much profit going pop but there are a lot of people out there without the kit or skills who just look at the cost same as getting a price for windows and if its fits the m2 build price they take it as its no hassle and gets done.

Thats a really good rate Buzzard and to be paid each week/ month without the hassle of tax returns, VAT, chasing invoices and having huge finance over your head is a real bonus. I'd stay where you are mate, why spend 70k plus and all the risk to gain another £10/hr

I dont see that a great wage tbh. your a skilled operator. surely running your own there is more in it, especially once your machine is paid up

This is the outlook I had , buy second hand lo is hours run it for 2 years then have really low finance on the second machine

I know it depends on location but that seems pretty reasonable by se England levels
I have mates paying £900 a month to live in some fairly grotty places and over a grand for a single bedroom house

And some of the gastro pubs are around £7.50 a pint but i don't think wages are much different. To the rest of the country

You would be a fool to go elsewhere, follow your heart by all means.... But plant hire doesn't earn serious money atm

i run a digger because i like it ,i can come and go as i please usually work dries up around this time but got plenty of contacts in the building trade so can always get a bit of inside work over the winter and its nice to have a bit of a change.running a big machine 13 ton and over is expensive,buckets and attachments are thousands not hundreds ,new undercarrage will set you back about a months money and insurance is close to a grand .around here i can get £25 hr plus fuel and transport cost on top if client provides fuel or £35 hr inc fuel .im not gonna make a fortune but enjoy my work but after 25 yrs laying blocks its easy work in a warm dry cab . i could never make it work with a new or nearly new machine with big finance costs so good luck to the o/p if you think your gonna make better money

As I said before the rates always amaze me for the larger kit.
Fair enough a few people have machines that have been paid off but running large kit for 1.5t money is crazy

Local agency charge between £20-24 plus vat for upto 9 hour day then time and third

tradesmen around here only get £18 hr on day rate we are in the arse end of wales you boys up in the wealthy parts of england might be able to get the big money but we cant much less oppertunity but i can make a grand a week on a 20 k machine sitting on my arse ,was laying a 1000 blocks to get same money ,you make the best of your local customer base and shop around for a good used machine and pray it doesnt break down in a major way ,a 500hr service if done yourself costs a few hundred nquid and a few tubes of grease

When rates are discussed on any public forum you always get some high and some low, most of it is down to cost of labour and as that makes up may be 80% of the rate and that is why the difference between a 1.5 ton and a13 ton rates seem so small, you are going to get highs and lows may be when some one is fishing for rates it would be a idea to say the area of the uk they are interested in working,

I worked out a few weeks ago what my 3CX has cost to run the last 3 years. Worked out at £10/hour on the clock but only £5/hour it’s on hire as I must spend half my time out the cab This included breakdowns, servicing, tyres, insurance and finance payments. Fuel is supplied by the hirer so doesn’t include that.
