Its an old Joke Buzzard, the topic was discussed many times on the previous forum and general consensus was you can earn more with a micro digger and a track barrow with a quarter of the investment. Not the dream many of us have to have a proper sized machine with our name on but the sad reality of a plant hire market where you can hire the machine for less than £500/ week. You'd pay more than that to own one on HP finance.

Buzzard for what it's worth I charge £360 a day for a 13.
Don't do lot of hire with them, fact is the money's all in piece work. Hire just fills some gaps in between.

...... then thought better of it ..... for exactly the reason he's posted ..... it's a huge bone of contention that was discussed to the nth degree on CEF and Rob @Hydremaduck 'll give you chapter and verse as to why not to buy a 13t

Met someone last week earning a good living out of a CAT and Genny. £1000 investment with some spray paint and a bit of liability insurance and he drives round in a BMW marking out services before the contractor starts. His contract states he cant be held responsible for locating all services so to be honest it wasnt 100% clear when we started digging anyway!
GPS setting out guys earn well - up to £900/day if you fit 3 jobs in but its nearly 20k to get the kit and some training.
I work with some soil testing guys regularly who have a mini core drilling rig that is based on a track barrow frame. Fits in a van, drive to site, extract soil from various depths and bag up for analysis. £450/day upwards, more if installing gas monitoring and that's a £15k investment plus van. They are always busy as every new site needs to be tested before the foundations can be designed.
CBR testing is another one I might get into. Minimal kit required - can jack off my landrover front bumper. Bit of training and thats got to be an easy £300/ test. Modern sites are requiring not just the piling mats to be tested but scaffold mats now. Stupid H+S if you ask me but I'm happy to make money off it if I can!
Basically anything other than standard digger driving makes money. The more you specialise the better money can be made - a lesson I've learned after the past 4 years slogging away doing groundwork...

I'm afraid your deluded if you think you will earn better money as a owner driver...

This season have I charged £90hr for my 14 tonn duck, Liebherr 314, 2007 model, When I pull away fuel and running cost have I approximately £60-70hr left in gross salary, The duck is fully paid down.
So if anybody offered me £18hr wood I turn around on my heel and walk away laughing
As most of you guys probably now, is the cost of living in Norway A h**l off a lot more expensive den in UK
Bear in the pub in the popular areas can set your back £10
A flat of 70 square meters In My Area is 8-9K a month to rent

It's honestly tempting. We are elsewhere atm and the TB175's are both on there way back to the yard as I'm on a 13t on decent money, it shows a fact when you can afford to stand machines and tbh at £35/hr we do charge well for them.
