TBH your pissing in the wind trying to track stuff in with excavators.... Very rare these days that the grousers are narrow enough to do any good.
A lot of ops aren't trying to track it in though they are trying to flatten it out before rolling it.

It depends what your trying to achieve. As to whether tracking in is a good option. But regardless of that block pads are generally quite narrow and won't seal 60 and down crush as well as a set of steels on the same machine despite the steels being 200mm wider.

My boss runs near identical machines in most classes up to 13t with a variety of tracks which allows good comparison between track types on the same carriers

Just be careful of tracks that are too cheap. I had a set of our local Tak dealer and to say they they were complete frickin junk is putting it mildly. The lugs were spaced too far apart and had far too much flex in them- made them jump off the sprockets on a daily basis. Got rid and put Camso on and they are brilliant, the continuous overlapping lugs are brilliant and yet to have one de-rail.
I just had a quote from tak dealee for xt tracks, were these same?

No they weren't XTs. I've never tried XTs but because they came from the same dealer as the s**t ones I didnt want to risk it again. Camso are very good in by experience
They were ok price said they've been selling them for 12 years i think he said.

Had best results from tracking in road plainings with steel tracks better than a roller.
Yeah I've had good results from tracking in type 1 and the like too when it's not been enough to bother having a roller there, especially if the top surface just needs consolidating and level of compaction isn't critical. I did a load of erosion repairs on the moor where getting a roller too would have been futile surprising how quickly an area can be covered by the wide tracks on my Kubota
