Compaction wheel on a mini

Anyone use a compaction wheel on a mini?
If so are they any good

Often thought about one but would want the headstock welded at 90degrees to the machine if that makes sense. So you could track along side a trench and compact it rather that straddling which you can’t always do. Then I think if that’s the case just track along the trench

but couldn't come up in layers then ..... put a two way/4 pin head on it .... or even a swivel head

No that is the downside normally a plate job to start with also have to consider the limited reach on a mini digger would allow for such a scope of works like on a larger machine. 9 times out of ten your tracking over what your working on unless your working your way out of somewhere. Same reason a plate doesn’t really work on a small machine

obviously that’s my humble opinion I just feel you’d get more use out of a man a machine and a labour than 1 man and a compaction wheel

that being said I’d still by one ! Having a hydraulic hitch makes you more than happy to change buckets

Not heavy enough and limited working range imho. Also ties the digger up which could be carrying on layering up the trench while someone is wacking/ramming the fill.

I've got a homemade one that uses the track idler wheel off a 20 tonner. It'll fit down a trench dug by a ten inch bucket and works well for me.

I certainly would not put a less experienced operator on a mini with a compaction wheel as it would be awfully easy to roll the machine.

I had thought about making one for my mini but after reading this perhaps I should stick with the Wacker

Got one on my 6T under the Engcon, handy thing but I rarely use it, can’t even find any photos of it on my phone! Everything has to be spot on to use it - dry enough but not too dry, deep enough fill that you don’t destroy whatever your backfilling! Small enough area that it’s not mind numbing!
