Evening forum just joined tonight as I have a benford roller I am in need of a bit of help with

Single drum or twin ride on?

Hi Mick-the-fitter,
Its a 2004 tv 1200 ride on roller small oil leak on round plate on the outside face on motor ( very similar to a thread on here about a dumper ) have taken the motor off and stripped down in workshop, looks like someone has had ago at it and thought better of it and shoved it back together. Outer round plate is new which is why I think it’s been botched piston seal is damaged brake plates have no brake material on them just metal to metal as I understand the correct assembly of inner and outer plates should be alternating (they ain’t ) so that’s where I’ve got to, thinking I need new parts outer round plate with o ring new piston seal 21 outer and 19 inner brake plates. Am I on the right track?

Mick is the definitive man on this type of machine, but it sounds like you’re on the right track. Have you got a workshop manual and parts books? It’ll give a measurement for the thickness of the stack when it’s correctly assembled. Also it may be that they are a plain metal plate with no friction material running in oil.

Will get some photos tomorrow, just look back at the thread on the dumper was posted by Route 56 Nov 6 2020 exactly the same motor he took pictures of , the one I have is Poclain msf 02 if that helps

Where actually is the leak? Does the brake work apart from the leak?

Leaking from the round tin cover on the outer face brake was not working but hard to be sure piston seal badly damage when someone made a bad job of installing piston housing where the piston travels was full of dirt all cleaned up now thinking the piston seal was the cause of leak, one thing I can’t find out is the brake discs have metal to metal as in no friction material bonded to half of them, should they be just metal to metal?

Looking at your photo I would have said there wouldn’t be a lot of room left for friction material, I would re- pack and re-seal the brake assembly and test it.

we diversified from farming 40 odd years ago into land drainage contracting our trench less laser controlled machine bought new in 1978 did a lot of work until the late 1980s when land drainage grants were severely cut we then moved into groundwork’s mostly on courtyard development sites still do bit with our 13 ton Cat and 5 ton Hitachi.
