Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
It Can Work to hours on battery Alone, and indefinitely if connected to the Grid, and with the diesel charging the batteries while driving the pumps together with electric motor diving the pumps, it saves about 30% off fuel

Thing is the obsession with getting away from fossil isn't without its own major drawbacks. As I've said all along efficiency is the biggest and easiest short term solution in many cases and what we should properly have been trying for a while. I bet its surprising how many machines out there are working well below capacity and certainly not doing much more than a few hard hours in total in a day.

anyone have pictures of backhoes doing site work? Here in the US it's pretty uncommon, and we'd like to start doing it. I think we may need a dumper as well. thanks all

I'd say the main sell of a backhoe loader is that you can do away with a dumper for small jobs! Lots of American companies seem to run mini track loaders and skidsteers, do you run any?

It's funny, here we look at the standard British model of three buckets with a quick hitch, paired with a dumper and say 'how old fasioned, get a loader like they do in Europe/America!' Then you come asking us about dumpers to be all cutting edge :ROFLMAO:

Mind you, I'm saying that as I prepare to load up my 3t dumper for a little job today!

We don't all look at a dumper as of fashioned. Personally i look at folk obsessing over tracked loaders and mini loaders and often think they think it's play time not work. Nearly all digging that requires using a digger can't be done with a loader. End of the day loaders are for re-handling not digging. Why use a digger to put it in a pile so a loader can move it when you could put it straight in a dumper and move far more each time.

Probably comes down to dumper in the US of A's eyes is a one trick pony

Environment.

In the UK we have a reasonably wet climate, Which means when it's dry you need to be on it and running fast with the lightest Net machine that will haul the most material. A 3t dumper sits at 2.5t, and will carry double or more it's own weight..... a 2.5t loading shovel will be lucky if it carries a ton and a half in it's bucket.

As for that Battery assisted Nonsense.... I bet lugging the battery round burns more energy than it'll ever save.

Local retired contractor to here spent his life on a backhoe- he said the ford was the best machine he owned for getting accross moorland- I think they're comparatively light compared to modern backhoes and quite wide rear tyres too.

Not arguing that dumpers have their place. But I'd rather both the digger and the loader driver keep working rather than be sitting waiting for each other, and the loader can often bring a return load of type 1 or whatever and place it straight in the dig. As well as keep the tip tidy and lift a myriad of things that the dumper never could.

Work is play mate- do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life!

Wasn't it you who told me that I should use a dumper to move brash? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

If you had a backhoe you could achieve all that with just the one machine. No staff costs either.
Everyone says don't get a backhoe but I still want one- yeah it won't be perfect for everything and probably a summer/hard ground machine- but very handy tool to have in the arsenal I'd reckon...

My old fella started out with a 3cx and that was his bread and butter machine for 10 years or so. He still had dumpers to run alongside it on a lot of jobs. Why dig it twice when you can load it straight in to the machine that can take it away. I get the fact that @doobin comes at it from a different angle, unless I'm wrong he seems to work on a day rate so his way of making more money is to have more kit he can charge a higher rate for on the job. My method is not to charge a flat day rate but tell the customer ball park figure of what job is going to cost and then do it in the most efficient and cost effective way for me to make a profit off it. To swap a £2500 3 ton dumper for a 40k loader which on the work i do would take twice as long doesn't make sense for me. Climate and terrain up here doesn't suit loaders for most of the year.

also Dumpers are robust and fairly tough so less chance of vandalism and theft etc vs 50k avant left on a job, trapped in with bucket in skip etc they're fairly secure and no glass in most cases to break. cheap enough to have multiples of them and can shift a lot of muck with them

I do about 50/50 dayrate vs price work. However, I think where we differ is that it's rare that a job I price is just 'dig that out and move it to there'. Truth me told, I'm not much of a 'groundworks' contractor- it's rare I dig much deeper than 1m.

I will use a £2500 3 ton dumper when it's cost effective, like today!

And I'm assuming even when it is day rate I doubt your the type of person to have a machine there costing the customer money if it wasn't paying its way. Dumpers are a one trick pony so good thing they are one of a the few bits of plant readily available at not silly money- yet!

There are two types of person on here;
a) what sized digger do I need for this job, or
b) is a digger the best machine for the job?
To dismiss a loader as just a re handling machine is like fifty years ago when excavators were dismissed as just a trenching machine on a lot of jobs. Doob is making his machine work for him, so Fair play Doob. When I started out I spent most of my first year or two on 3CX’s, and while sometimes you needed a dumper, on some jobs it was just a hindrance. In the way, in the wrong place, or You’d end up with heaps tipped all over and end up having to civilise it up with the backhoe.
