I've smoked most of my life, but actively discourage any youngster from doing so .....
but, freedom of choice was pretty well cast in stone in most western societies, last time I looked ...
all governments have creamed the tobacco industries for centuries, on duties and i know that this will be seen by many as 'the smoker' talking, but the money spent on 'ill smokers' is a minuscule proportion of the revenues collected from their 'habit' in the general scheme of things. The figures are all there to check!

Where and from what, are governments going to replace the massive levels of cash they rake in from taxation on an enormous industry that also employs millions of people ??????

The politics of it is hard to get your head around but adding duty to the price has done naff all for years in trying to stop youngsters smoking . This is a bit radical but at least they are trying something new . I do get the point though about trying to get people to do it voluntarily as opposed to making it law .I agree to a degree Vin ...

the reason they've not priced it out of reach is they can't afford to Vin - they couldn't cope with the loss of revenue it generates ...... you could say exactly the same about alcohol, but same argument -- can't afford the lost revenues .... and you don't see the idiots wanting to fight the world after half a dozen fags

Youngsters have too much disposable income (or f all responsibility for money to matter) for higher duty to have ever bothered them. Simply a very easy cash cow for govt. To add to @V8Druid point it's ironic when people for years have gone on about the cost to the nhs of smokers. Years ago any cancer was either from smoking or industrial related. Now there's seemingly a lot more cases of cancer and an awful lot not related to smoking or breathing stuff in at work and a lot of people receive treatment and live to old age. That wouldn't be the case if it wasn't for revenue off tobacco and the number of people to test and develop treatment on from years back.

I hear what you are saying and as I don’t smoke it wouldn’t directly effect me. It is the slippery slope argument, what is next, alcohol, fatty food, meat? Once you start “helping” people, where do you stop. After all it is for their own good.

spot on Gaz ...... we are all born with and live our lives with rogue cells in us, which can develop into benign or malignant tumours .... just needs a trigger of some sort, from a bump to stress, all sorts can trigger them. Some ppl never 'find' a trigger, others less fortunate 'do' .... there is no rhyme or reason to it. My best friend died of the big C at 41 .... fit as **** and looked after himself ... developed oesophageal cancer and gone in 2 months
... never been ill in his life.
