Ive got a couple of bathrooms to fit . I have recently been using plastic pipe (hep2o) but thinking about going back to copper.
However i dont want to be soldering pipes and so im thinking about buying a press if i cant hire one easily.
Ive seen these on ebay

are they any good or do i need something like this

or is that a stupid question?
I dont have any experience of pressing pipe fittings on, only soldering or push fit.

Few plumbers using them a fair bit round here now but its a cost passed onto customer imo as fittings are also more expensive. You are ultimately reliant on an o ring which long term who knows. If you can solder I'd be using solder. Plumber using them the other day i spoke to said he's using them as he feels less chance of leaks. Fair enough he doing a 20 odd bed hotel but ffs with over 20 years doing the job he should be confident in his soldering.

I was considering buying one, but as I’m only doing domestic houses I just can’t justify the outlay of machine, calibration and More expensive fittings never mind the various brands of jaws. I came across a “press fit special” who’d been doing a bit at a house, I was there quoting for a new boiler and some gas work. I could have done these bits in end feed fittings for about a pound 🙄 Unless it’s standardised I’ll be sticking with soldering and end feed, with hep2o plastic where required.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
got a couple of the presses somewhere stashed ... had from a big pharmaceutical factory who's maintenance workshops i cleared years ago ... never used 'em ... they used 'em on S/steel and Cu up to 4" IIRC ... will dig 'em out and get some pix ... wouldn't wanna buy 'em new .... also had miles of new pipe too, which sadly 'went', in the yard clear out. usual story -- wish i'd kept a few lengths of each

15 and 22 are the only ones I would ever use.
Didn't know they needed calibration.
Nothing looks as good as end feed but it takes ages compared to plastic. I suppose crimp on will take similar time to end feed. I just don't like using heat on jobs anymore.

Blast away in plastic and just use end feed for what's visible, or even solder rings.

£1400 for a tool you’d use every day doesn’t sound much to me tbh…
Millionaire plumbers’ day rates are massive - spending a bit on tools once in a while to offset a bit of tax can’t be the end of the world surely?!

Biggest issue i see is the o rings long term. Fine left alone but in a few years time pipe gets a knock and o ring falls apart and water pi**ing everywhere.

There's a load of copper push fits on the job I'm at now they look crap, loads of movement in them no idea if they leak as the boiler has been ripped out.

No idea on what the proper crimped ones are like

I assume they'll be pretty solid as i think they rely on the crimp to hold them onto the pipe. Sad thing is it's another skill being lost, like plastic pipe doing away the skill of using a pipe bender. One of the worst things you see with plastic is the state of it thrown in, you can actually do a real tidy job with plastic for v little effort but few do.

Tbh it doesn't matter if as within a decade plumbing will all come pre installed same with the electric. All runs pre planned and cut in a factory and just plug it all together on site.
And any work required on existing property's will write the property off to be demolished and replaced with an eco house that runs on the farts produced by the diet of brussel sprouts that are the only thing we will be allowed to consume

New build Hotels and care homes have been this way for a 10+ years, just small service hatches in hallways to connect electric and plumbing, all carpets, tiling and fixtures done.

Maybe on big sites but small domestic developments I don't see yet due to cost. Factory built ain't cheap whatever they tell you.

Around here even the small developments are pre fab panels, ATM moment it is then brickwork over the top and plasterboard on site. So not a massive jump to pre installed utility's. Especially as it's not beyond the realm of imagination that basic runs could be done by robot.

Issue with any Prefab is the simple fact that transport is a Twat.

For it to be cost effective you need to be talking completed rooms..... Not halves, not walls..... completed rooms made in the factory, Q/C'd and then delivered to site..... Fancy a 2.5m x 40' room? No? ahh pity.

We won't see it in the UK..... Possibly we will see larger developments utilizing on site production facility's and then SPMT's moving complete structures onto pre set positions. But realistically we don't need more houses, we need to be safeguarding and utilising existing housing stock.
