Whats the best value for money?

Hi folks already had a couple of threads on this, hopefully this is the last. Currently in the market for an8 ton machine.

Needs to be tidy and I'm not doing private sales.

I can get a few months old kobelco sk75 with 3 buckets and 300hrs on the clock for 60k. I believe brand new is about 65k.

Looking at diggers at say 2 to 4 years old with 2000 to 4000hrs on the clock, they are all making from 40k right up to 54k

One dealer has a 300 hr sk75 dash7 with no hitch or buckets at 58k and a 2yr old sk75 dash 5 with 2200 hrs for 49k with no hitch or buckets.

It looks like to me that a 60k nearly brand new machine is a better buy than an older one with several thousand hours for 45k plus.

Whats people thoughts?

My gut feel is the same, either brand new or take one at 60k with only 300hrs on the clock with hitch and buckets. To me this is a better buy than older ones. I'll probably be keeping it for a while and the new one seems better value long term

I am feeling rather smug that I managed to get my SK75 2 years ago for the price I paid!! Now sporting the bells and whistles of an ex demo Engcon. A set up I could not afford to replace at the prices you are quoting!!
Tough call between the 3month old and new!!

not just the 3 mths/300 hrs though is it .... what's the wait like if you go new ?

I believe new plant stock is starting to catch up if you ring around. 2nd hand prices should/will return to normality soon I’d wager…

I said to the dealer when I went in to view the kobelco last week that a 3000hr/ 3yr old machine at 45k did not seem like good value compared to the nearly new one I looked at. He agreed with me and said people simply weren't doing the maths first.

I think there are more new machines about than people think. I'm guessing though that new prices won't fall now? I don't think Ive ever seen new prices go fown

It's more to do with which brand, some seem to have stock of certain models which is good if it suits what you want but ffs don't but just because it's all you can get. Another thing to consider is tax and current tax relief if you can make use of it, it may narrow the gap even more between new and couple of year old.

There has been a massive amount of support for businesses to invest in new kit over the last couple of years, with grants and loans and tax relief. My personal thoughts are that everyone who would/could take advantage of it now has, which has superheated the market over the last 12-18 months and worsened any stock shortages caused by the pandemic. This is coming to an end as supply starts to catch up, and some dealers may end up with 2021 machines sat in their yards in 2022…
Businesses that have been unnaturally flush with cash will have tax bills soon, and some/many will fold. Relatively new low-houred repossessed stock will hit the auctions next year, and our export market isn’t what it was.
I predict some decent deals on new kit in early/mid next year.
(I will also say that I predicted similar with pickups this year and got it totally wrong, having sold my truck at what I thought was the top of the market I am still waiting for it’s replacement and have now been told I’ll be lucky to see it in January!)….

I think this is what I want to do just trying to build up the courage to pull the trigger

The dealer told me that new prices will be going up in January by 6 to 8% across the board and all makes are the same and that they normally put up prices in January every year. Anyone care to comment on this or is it just a sales tactic? Thanks

They always say they are going up in Jan and they very possibly do but I've never actually checked. The only thing with buying late in the year is in very short time you're 2021 machine will be a year old, I've bought twice in Nov (taken delivery) but if you plan on keeping for a several years it's no big issue imo as condition is as important on older machines than 1 year difference in age.

Thanks. Yes might be trying to scare me into buying. Fair enough point, I expect it to be a longer term investment tbh, so might be here 10 years. But it just depends how things go
