I have been chatting to a driving agency i used to work for today and they have a temp to perm job on the books as a milkman £25,800 a year starting wage is 6 nights a week start at 10 pm then job and knock am seriously thinking about going for it is £5800 more a year then i am on now as a lifting fitter and less stress and would work out with more usable time at home

Where in the country are you??
I'm sorry to be rude but it does seem gap are royally taking the Mickey out of you at that wage.

I'm in the south east so I appreciate we are on inflated wages, but labourers around here would be on 26-28k a year on the books.
Have you considered speaking to your local councils principal highways contractor. There blokes have the easiest work going and are put through reams of tickets.
If you are prepared to stay there a couple of years you could easily come away with machine tickets worth a minimum of 35k a year and for very little work.
Some of the lads I know have been put through class 1, digger, dumper, roller telehandler, abrasive wheels, streetworks, lantra traffic management, 3 day first aid and a whole load of smaller ones. Not bad for a couple of years doing the most laid back job going

I am a bit up from you in East Anglia Norfolk to be precise and yeah gap has been truly been taking the piss out of me as only got put on that wage a couple of months ago after being the fitter for 4 years was on sub £19 grand before same as a driver.
I would have no worries doing that in fact that would be a dream job but that would be tarmac or kier around here both of them are well tied in to gap around here. In fact I went for a kier utility's job a couple of years ago and as soon as they see i worked for gap it caused one or 2 questions to be asked and no offer of a job even though i could do it with ease. The milkman thing might not be where i end up as they are also going to put me up for fitter jobs. I am lucky in the fact they know me of old (worked for them before i joined gap) so they know i can work and what i am able to do so going to throw me about to everyone lol

Good Groundworks guys are worth the money . I for the life of me can’t understand why it’s classed as unskilled. It takes way longer than most apprenticeships to learn what you need to know to be a really good ground worker .
The same applies to a plant op. Some guys can understand what’s required on a job to finish it before they’ve turned a turf . Other guys can be really good on a machine but just cant see the big overall picture . They need someone to tell them what to do .

Trouble is the backwards situation with training and qualifications...... I've not quite worked out how it benefits the big players to have fuckwits roaming about but it does.

The really stupid ones will be totally against better training......

After having someone show up and ask for an apprenticeship and be disappointed with their followup I've decided to advertise a position. Ideally a school leaver. I'm not looking forward to the stress of looking through folks details and picking a candidate you need to work with and be able to teach them the ways of the world 😣 they tend to come out of school with no experience whatsoever.

you will find come September there is a class full of them looking for an employer. Well done for giving up the time and money it costs, there are a lot of good kids out there. Not all feckless.

One golden rule, phone stays in the van.

The few young lads I've had couldn't grasp basic concepts, or use any form of tools, wouldn't have been too bad but one of them was doing a carpentry course before switching to brickwork 🙄
