1.1ton Vs 1.7-1.9 ton digger?

How much more productive are modern 1.7 to 1.9 ton diggers when compared to something like a E10?
It's been a while since I drove something like that because I just use the E10 for everything or hire a 3.5 ton kx101.
I think it would be nice to have something bigger now and then but really don't want to have to drag a 2.7 ton machine about, my old bangers would soon expire. Also I don't want to start doing two trips to and from jobs as I like to take my stuff home every day and that's no problem when dumper and digger go on the same trailer.

1.9T Will do most of what a 2.7t will do, bar loadover height.

Our Fleet goes 0.8t, 1.5, 1.6, 7.5t..... make of that what you will.

If it’s for day rate man and machine hires, 1.7t is all you need and much more profitable than 2.7t.

I am not familiar with the E10 but a1.9 is much more productive than the kubota micro I hired last week. Problem was the 1.9 wouldn’t fit in to the site so the other alternative was to see if Rory’s face shovel was available for hire.

Ok thanks all, that might be something to think about then if I start getting more 100+m2 jobs with good access.
I did a 119m2 job the other day and felt like I could do with a bigger machine.
Something that could handle a bigger grading bucket and could load a 3ton dumper would be nice.

Heres my two for comparison...

1.9 (actually only 1.8 with canopy and a bucket) Loads more productive, fit twice as much in the 39 inch ditching bucket shifting stuff round.

If I hop back on the E10 after a project on the E19, it feels like you’re only tickling about.... then there’s the extra reach. Doesn’t feel too much different to a 3ton in that department.

But when you need a micro only a micro will do.

The thwaites I've tried with fits but don't know if there are different wheel options.
Or whether I'm just a bit more aggressive at making it fit.

Some of the newer 3 ton dumpers are narrower and with i think slightly smaller wheels than a proper old school 3 ton dumper. They look like they'd carry less as well but maybe they don't. One of these may fit which i think the newer thwaites are.

Yeah my 2 ton Thwaites fits just in mine. That’s rear on first so does make it a bit nose heavy, tailgate has about 4” clearance. So would be very surprised if a 3 ton fits in…

Agree with the 1.7/1.9t category being a big step up from the micro but dont agree that the 1.9t can approach the same output as the 2.8t.

For me my u17 isn't even close to the kx71

3t of lead is a lot less volume than 3t of feathers so it depends on what 3t manufacturers are using as there medium
But I do agree they are getting smaller

I wish I had kept my old 3T straight tip when the 3t swivel tip arrived - hydro box is great and yes the swivel has its advantages but it crap for going with the 8t machine .... fecking ditcher on 8t is too big, also it doesnt tip anywhere near steep enough if your facing uphill or its a bit clarty
Might have to get a 6t straight tip but im trying to reduce my amount of kit to maintain not add to it.

Just a note, my mate hires out a few small machines.. he has a few micros and a 1.7 ton.... the micros are out everyday and the 1.7 rarely is.

But I could be the area he operates in

I'm seeing about 50/50 on jobs. About 50-60% only a micro would fit, the others could fit a larger machine. I've only had comments about my machine being a bit small on one job and it wasn't from the customer (grab lorry driver and someone doing a job for the gas DNO.

Thing is though, the average customer doesn't actually realise. So if you buy another, make sure it's either because you want it or it will pay it's way.

What's the other digger and driver competition on the island like?

I think for operated machine's there is at least four other micros, three 1.7ton machine's and I've only seen one 2.7 ton machine, a sv26.
Plus one bigger machine only hire place and 4 bigger ground work firms.
