Apparently not allowed I've often thought that but I read somewhere that only military helicopters are allowed to carry more than 1 ton and only for military purposes.

You can hire the special Russian heavy lift helicopter I'm sure they can pick up more than a tonne

In the days I sold timber lodges I got a quote for air lifting 2 halves of a building on to a site. It was £30k. The building was only £24k so we built it on site from parts.

I did see about 15 years ago a chinook lift a broken down sea king away from behind skiddaw. Was seriously impressive tbh with that weight under

I found one on google earlier that offered 9t, as you say could be a special.

Bear Grylls has an island just off the North Wales coast near my mum’s house and he had a military Chinook carry a load of shipping containers across from the mainland about 10 years ago. Probably knows the right people to ask I guess!!!

This was interesting experience .watching them bomb tonne bags into the Dam at Whaley
was taking 5 at a time and they were all double bagged in MOD rated bags.

Spent some time under working under running helicopters when on the ground and when doing underslung work nothing that big though just a s76 (9 seater same as the JCB ones) and even for a big guy like me it can be a push to move around so makes you wonder what it is like under a chinook
