How big are your sleepers going to be and what is the span between each column? If it's 200x100 sleepers 2.5 long I would be tempted just to use 152UC23 for this.

I have always bought my RSJ off a agri building manufacturing firm and all my county cladding sheets as well
usually a deal can be done, a lot cheaper than builders merchant

Speak to these guys
They are now also doing structural steel for houses etc, way cheaper than any builders merchants. Good lads and very easy to deal with, speak to James or Brad.

again ? ...... was a time a while ago when you couldn't validate a quote longer than a week, 'cos you couldn't keep up with the increases  ... some sections got up to 1300 quid a tonne ... double what it's been for a while and over double what it had been then ........ came back down eventually though ........ steel was VERY cheap for a very long time -- 80,s, 90,s and a bit of the noughties

Not sure we shut them. I think we sold them off to foreign countries that keep getting government bail outs to keep the furnaces burning!!

British Steel was a fiasco ... grossly over manned, desperately inefficient, massively wasteful and hugely unprofitable ...... when they had a 'cull', late 80,s early 90,s, Llanwern, where i used to get into a lot with my cranes, went to a third of the manpower and actually became profitable, more than doubling, almost trebling its output .... and it was still a desperate place to get anything done ... you knew going in there, you'd be 'lucky' to do a couple of hours work in a 12 hr shift .... made for very long days ... and a night shift was dire....... be like the Marie Celeste ...... it's no wonder what happened, happened.
Port Talbot was even worse

TBH Mark, aside for the Chinese crap, most of it was better quality than 'home grown' ....
once had a bar of Russian  305 x 305 UC (my grading beam is made from the offcut) .... was absolutely perfect - bang on dimensional spec. and as true as it could possibly be - square and arrow straight which for a 16.5m bar was a bloody miracle .... :giggle: .... the Spanish mills also produced some very tidy product.
had 22t of 457 x 152 x 60 UB in once, for a long travel rail system, for a gantry job .... each length had to join to the next down a building with a crane rail fixed to the top ..... the centre web was between 12 and 18mm off centre .. you can imagine the issues that would have caused .... the lot went back - British mill - quality control .. non existent .......... the Spanish stuff that replaced it was cock on (y) ....... they killed them selves

I was quoted almost £150 for a sheet of 6mm plate, just before Christmas, which I thought was taking the piss?
And had this delivered a couple of weeks before Christmas and was surprised to find British Steel stamped on it!

what sort of price should we be paying a M for these ? Whats the normal production length as we can cut on site and maybe bit cheaper !

thanks

It's more like £700 a ton ATM.
If you take a 6.1m stock bar 152UC23 for instance it's 23kg/M approx so circa £140 plus delivery charge. If you are not planning having them galvanized I would consider getting it blast cleaned and primer painted from the steel stockist, most big ones stock painted sections, this will be approx £25/30/ton extra but saves huge time onsite. Most of ours comes up from Leeds so might get better deal if you are closer down south.
