Hi,
I am about to start a house project. There will be 400m3 to be excavated but I have to get all plant/ material under a 2.5m head height.
Is there a 5t digger that comes in at this height or does anyone have any suggestions?

You might be able to sus out a digger with a tilting cab to get through the low spot. I'm presuming it's a low bridge and not that you are building in a basement?

One of those questions that makes you think so seeing that i was next to my tak 240 i measured it. 2480mm high i would think anything bigger takeuchi make will be higher. Did a few bad access jobs years back we used to take cab off but newer machines aren't just a four bolt job like they used to be

Zero tail swing machine tend to be taller so that probably rules a lot out.

What limits the height? Can you dig down a bit under the low spot for access?

All depends on haul distances, but I would favour a older 3t digger without a cab and a 3t dumper.

Absolutely f**k all point running a 6t dumper beside a 3t digger. It'd be like a dwarf playing basketball against the globetrotters. Even a 4 tonner is abit big.

Well i run mine with my 4 tonner all the time far faster than using 3 ton dumper

How tight to this 2.5m are we talking? Is that a rough guess, or the exact measurement?

Your running a 4 ton machine though, not a 3 tonner.

Yeah ok if I'm on a bad access job I've often ran the 6 ton dumper and 1.9 tonner.

Depending on the ground would doing it American style be an option and get a big tracked skid steer in they must be considerably lower than a mini and the Americans use them to good effect on dig outs
Or an old school drott
Then a smaller mini to do the final level once the bulk is removed

Digger and dumper will run rings round a skid steer its just that the yanks don't know any better. I'm not even sure if they've even seen a dumper.

That Depends.

One man on a job.... Jumping between Digger and dumper can loose you a good hour a day. A large enough Skidsteer or loading shovel will piss rings round a Digger and Dumper depending on the haul distance.

I have a Customer that uses a Merlo and a 1.5t digger for this reason.... Loosen it up with the minidigger, then do the bulk with the moon/firebuggy (Merlo).... then catch fire on the way home and claim another new merlo on the insurance

Hmmmmm. Thing is that sounds more like using what you have to hand to get the job done. If you can get merlo in i can get 4 tonner in then your not losing too much time loading dumper. But if your loading skips on a short lead then your method wins out. Tbh there's too much about this restricted access job we don't know to give the right advice we're all guessing at the bits we don't know.

And with two operators while the dumper is off the loader can go about loosening up the next load

Yeah i see your angle now but to be fair skid steers and loaders are designed for re handling rather than digging so if you can get a reasonable size machine in there's no benefit. Depending on lead length two dumpers driven by one man and a man on digger loading can move some muck in a day. As long as digger can fill empty dumper while the other is away it doesn't matter how big or small it is.

Remember being in the states years ago and staying with my brother in law. A truck with decent size skidsteer pulled up at his neighbor's house to dig the driveway out for concrete. What that guy did in a few hours was mind blowing! Dug out, loaded and leveled one man and a guy cleaning around the edges with a shovel. Loaded up and gone an they layed the concrete the next day.
