Building a bridge, Help?

Hi Guys, looking at a yard, the only access is over a small burn, there is currently a bridge in place which needs replaced.
The current bridge consists of 2 steel beams spanning the burn with 20x 200mm x 100mm x 2.4m sleepers, they are past their best.
The new bridge needs to be wider, around 3.6 metres, the span over the burn is 4 metres.
How would you go about a new bridge? Any previous examples and pictures?

Cant pipe the burn, that's not an option, I don't have any photos, I will get photos tomorrow morning and post them up.

Excavate into the bank either side below the bed level. If you have the option of temporarily diverting the route makes work a lot easier.
Then formwork, reinforcement and place a concrete wall either side.
Use prestressed Breton flooring units and crane into place. Set the crown level to screed over with A202 mesh and 200mm readymix

Not very wide for lorry access though
Judging by several of the weighbridges I've been across alot of drivers fail to get on them with a whole yard to line up in let alone access off a tight road

What sort of quality are you after? It’s been discussed a couple of times on the farm forum and one suggestion was a flat-rack shipping container. Others have used artic flat trailers and cut the axles off.

biggest problem with either of those is access to get it sited ... sounds like it'd not be a great proposition??

It would need to be a proper bridge that looks decent aswell.
I think that a concrete foundation either side then a network of steel, then concrete bisons on top of the steelwork, then a concrete screed on top of that, that sounds substantial enough and think it would stand the test of time.

Depending on what it crosses if you dig away at the banks I think the E.A need to grant permission

so don't dig the bank ... step back in a metre or so, dig a gert hole and fill with conc ... increase the bridge span a metre or so, plus, either side and keep away from the watercourse all together ... may cost a little more, but could save a lot of buggeration

When people are talking about what you can and can't do, just note if you are building a bridge and public have access to said bridge it'll be execution class 4. Structural engineer certificate from SER. No doubt SEPA will want to know what's happening and the list goes on.
If you are not seeking any kind of permission from authorities and planning doing something under your own bat just throw in a few large bore pipes and cover with hardcore and lay concrete top.

think Neil said originally, he can't pipe it .. be the easiest solution by far .... it's all down to whether it's strictly private use or not really ... as you say Mike if it ain't it's a world of grief ....
other wise, two big holes for concrete and two '30ft flats', side by side (and they're pre-cambered) job done, with some approach ramps either end .... assuming one can get a crane and truck in to where they have to go .... but if the bridge needs to be 'lorry capable' one would assume they can get there

It will be a private bridge for my access only, I think keeping a bit back from the banking edge is a good idea, may cost a bit more though, il attach some pictures of the current bridge.

Try taking them in landscape on the phone, that usually results in them being in the correct orientation on the forum.
