Worth a read if your bored.... my particular favourite comment is that I'm biting the hand that feeds me by saying CPCS is rubbish 😂

Personal opinion is it's the time all tickets where f***ed off in favour of lifelong NVQ portfolio's.... If you've never done one it's a folder of photos of jobs with explanations and other documentation (method statements etc) which are then assessed to show you have done the job and have the knowledge. All other trades have them, and they last for life! Not just 2 or 5 years. Most of us already have them in order to gain the blue card for CPCS.

Edit - Quote of the day below for those not on linked in.... made me chuckle. 😂 Glad I live like @doobin and just do privates mainly these days to keep me away from these people.
Rory Sanders I take it you are a owner operator who operates under CPCS earning a living every day. if they are that bad of a scheme send them your card back and use a different scheme. Talk about bit the hand that feeds you

Don't complain - suggest what's better
Unfortunately I can only read the top two posts as I’m not a member of LinkedIn.
I stand by my opinion that if you only take a car test once you should only take an excavator test once. I also think the civil servants who make up this s**t don’t have to have competency testing so why should we, as after all we are paying their wages. Surely they should have to prove competence more than we should.

Speaking to my mate earlier and the test centre where he originally did his nvq/blue card test.....

Want to charge him £600 for a one day test to renew it , what a bunch of bellends his card is only running out this month so should just be cpcs and health and safety touch screen tests at like sub £60

Yes mine ran out the end of February I'd done a hs&e test already I did the module matcher tests and sent the form off before the end of January. By the last week of Feb I'd heard nothing so gave them a ring and the lass on the phone said oh yes I can see you've done the tests I'll send that to the printers now 😲 I received the new card to my old address (luckily my mum's) last week with the old photo on it but at least I'm covered now

Can somebody please explain how in hells teeth nearly all towns and citys of this country plus road systems, canals, waterways and indeed the industrial revolution all happened and constructed with(unless i'm mistaken)very few, if indeed any C.I.T.B C.P.C.S N.P.O.P.O.Rs or N.V.Qs registered plant operators, groundworkers, skills and any other skins working on the foresaid projects.
One test for life.
You can either operate a machine well and safely or you can't and if you can't you ,and if you couldn't you where soon told so and "down the road" you went
A card means sweet F.A really.Just means you performed to the correct standard on the day
Sorry.Post turned into a bit of a rant!

totally agree ..... just a money making scheme for lazy tw*ts, sat on their arses who are completely ****ing useless, but dreamt up a way of making money from being useless tw*ts who tell those that can, how to and then charge for the pleasure ... ... I doubt any of them could hold their own on a job site for a day, let alone hold down a job full time :mad::mad::mad:🤬🤬🤬

Well said! Chances are most guys are much better at the task in hand by the time their card expires than when they did the test in the first place. It’s just middle management job creation and arse covering

We have a saying in the "far East" "those who can do,those who can't teach"
Like driving a car or a truck.when you've passed your test you then learn to drive properly!!

You have to wonder what the point in an nvq is at tines when it requires 2 or 3 years of on the job experience but then you still require a card which takes a day to get which half the folk on the dole have to keep their benefits coming in. At the end of the day cards are not a legal requirement just that big jobs won't let you on without them. I'll stick to my nvq and private jobs and also the plant education no classroom can give

Wow, that certainly brings back some memories, think a lot of us can relate to that picture of growing up “in the cab” and as you say, no classroom can give you that, was about 5/6 years old when these were taken.

I've got some almost identical pictures like these. For the s**t that I took at school for liking plant rather than fast cars, I thought I was the only one back then. But it turns out there were more of us who would rather spend a day sat on the wing of a 3cx than play football.
Guys, we need a standalone thread for these old pictures. I've got loads of me either stood in front of, or on, or actually driving old kit when I was too small to reach the pedals. Ill dig them out this evening and see if we cant get a few others posting theirs too.

Proper education on plant
You learnt because you wanted too.You had deep respect for your trainer And because you where young and intertested all the other skins would muck in too and give you a wealth of knowledge into how things should be done. And woe betide you if you didn't listen or respect your teacher.Sadly now i'm afraid to say respect and common sense have all but gone, replaced by cards, certificates and bullshit!

i Learnt by having a play on machines at break times and by watching how different drivers went about their work at first I was confused that they all did things in different ways but ended up with basically the same results, every chance I got I would be in the seat one driver was often up the phone box calling his latest squeeze, I didn’t mind at all I was happy as a dog wi two dicks, a couple times the boss came around and questioned where matey was I would say oh he just nipped to the shop or something like that. Eventually we got split up and I was back mainly hand digging stuff, got called to office after work one day and asked if I thought I could do digger driving full time, i enthusiastically said yes that was mid 1970s I guess, and done it up until the end of 2018. Never had any courses or training just learnt along the was, had my card through grandfathers rights first off I think a cta card then citb/Cpcs I last renewed in November 2019 even though not working but I may get enthusiastic again. I don’t think the jobs changed for the better but I could be looking through rose tinted glasses.

Hi Rory, often follow your postings on PlantTalk and the one before that.
Bloody hilarious 😂 Been lurking on LinkedIn for 10 years or so and spotted your posting about CPCS and NVCs etc.
Started on the CPCS route for the Blue Card about 6 years ago and got me Red Card with National Plant Training 🤓
Only got asked for it once and then the bastards kept me waiting for payment over 3 months 🤬
So I will NEVER work for big companies again.
Like you keep it to private sites and small builders who appreciate yer skills and commitment 🤠 .

I aim to entertain.... I'm personally sick of the young lads trying to enter the industry being shafted for every penny 🤔 too much bollocks on LinkedIn with fuckwits trying to look professional..... So I'm now there to spread reality hate and humor 😂

me too .... been on it a similarly long time, but can not be arsed interacting ....

I just wouldn't entertain working for large outfits ... or even quoting them .. if the inquiry arrived with a hundred + pages of pre-amble, bollox, contract doc.s, etc. .... it went straight in the bin .. not worth the time reading it .... you knew it'd end up in a shafting, from the get go

Well said 😉
Don't get me wrong, I can do fancy CAD stuff and Method Statements etc etc., but as a small sole trader don't need the hassle
It's bad enough doing work for a customer, who wants a detailed quote....but they then end up with an 'estimate' :ROFLMAO:

I've been coming to the conclusion that a stress free life (but not being mega rich) might actually be better overall for my health than the hassle of running teams. Running teams is the only way in this game to become proper wealthy, but I reckon I can still make an OK living with one or two blokes, plenty of machines and a decent set of skills.

Agree with that (y)
My little mini makes me a minimum of £20 per hour (even at mates rates) doing only work that I want to do 😇
A friend of mine is a Director of a large Fencing Contractor company.
He runs large teams on his jobs and often quotes for me and my contacts.
Big shock to me that he had a heart attack a few weeks ago 2 days after I saw him socially
Fortunately he has survived with 5 stents being fitted......
.......manage yer stress and stay healthy buddy :giggle:

I think your right. Yes you may be very wealthy if you have large teams, but from what I’ve observed, if you value the quality of your work and job satisfaction, then best stay small and keep a grip on what you do. It’s also a bit easier to weather a storm if your a small firm I think.
There’s a demolition firm locally that’s not done much, if anything since Christmas, laid a lot of staff off apparently. Bigger is not always better.
