My lad is 15. Took him in to work with me for two days last year, he had a go at wiring, TIG welding, bit of spannering and some driving on a 312. He loved it, said he’d like to come in a day every week. When we were looking at secondary schools one thing that impressed me was the workshops. At his parents evening I told his design & tech teacher he was looking forward to doing welding. “Oh no, mr H, we can’t use the welders any more as we can’t afford to upgrade the extraction.” Every way you turn nowadays you’re shafted. TechnIcally when he came in to work, all he should have done was watch, not actually do anything for himself. When I think back to what I was doing at 13, the chance to work on a farm at that age was a Great opportunity.

School I went to in oz did 4 days a week in last 2 years with extra hour each day. I was with a chippying gang the spare day and some Saturday's. Much more set up for apprenticeships/real work out there.

When I think back to what I was doing at 13, the chance to work on a farm at that age was a Great opportunity.

I’ve only learnt how to operate things from spending time at a mates dads yard over the years. It’s not new fancy kit but it does the job and he’s the kind of guy who’ll say jump on that and have a go out. I wouldn’t say I’m anything like an expert but using common sense I can do what I need to with my kit.

.......We need to get on a ditch the EU rules and regs including the new one which is due to come in where even if you have a piece of equipment on your own private property it has to be insured! How are they going to police that one! it's just common sense lets get on with it.

tell me more .... as said HTF are they going to police that one got two dumpers, me Jake, me 'Drema, me lil' walking Fleming and a roller .. could get expensive ...... is this coming in before the license to fart is required or after ??

Not all youngsters are workshy. I took on a young lad at the start of the year, 18 years old and keen as mustard. Can’t stand still for 5 minutes, constantly looking for something to do. He’s asked me if I would give him an apprenticeship in groundwork’s so I’ve been looking into that.

I’ve also got a 15 year old who comes twice a week for work experience, he hasn’t done well at school academically and this is where the education system is failing, there’s far too much emphasis on academic achievement and physical jobs like ours are looked down on. His practical skills are great, he’s keen to learn how to do things. He asked for a go at laying slabs the other week and made a right job of it. I don’t know what he’s going to do when he leaves school though, most apprenticeships round here go to family friends who mostly aren’t interested in doing them.

sounds like you need an apprentice ... he's a bit of a rare commodity by the sound of it ... if he can earn his money, weekly, hopefully he can only get better and could well be a valuable asset, in time

My experience of young lads on a firm I do groundwork for,turn up late.leave of early and have long meal breaks.they also bugger about continually if they are not on phones making calls or surfing the net and rarely do as they are told.some are impossible to get rid of too and it pisses of the older staff who turn up on time and work hard and get similar money.i can’t say I’ve personally ever encountered a pong lad who grafts but I admit there are some about.also amazes me when lads are on mini diggers and dumpers and they damage stuff and don’t give a monkeys.

I read about it a while back apparently i think it was in Poland a chap had a tractor and was using it, he had a tradesman working up a ladder and he knocked the ladder and injured the tradesman, so the infinate wisdom that works in the EU ie some prick of an MEP has come up with everyone has to have there equipment (which included ride on mowers) insured even on private land and i read that last week the EU had passed this and that we may have to follow the rule until we have fully left although our government at the moment has said get stuffed to them, Yet again the only winner will be the large insurance company that makes all of the money.

I'd have thought most household cover would accommodate that, as I believe it should cover public liability for non residents entering/on your property ??

It’s hideous the amount these companies pay for agency drivers!! I haven’t kept up with them over the years but 5 years ago it was eye watering, more than I was WITH the machine!!!
