I see changes are a coming to our industry. what with the brexet thing and government so say stopping the cheaper labour coming in to the uk.

The proposed changes to gas oil tax

So in a nut shell running costs for plant are going up

Labour will cost more and probably be less abundant (wages will have to go up to keep the few good guys ) so more higher cost

Is this going to change the whole business module of the ground works and plant hire sectors ?

At the moment the big boys seem to hire cheep plant (low speck) and put cheep labour on the seat surround it with more cheap labour.

Having worked in Sweden things seem to be done differently over their and the problems we are now going to face thy have been working with for years is now the time to look to the east for the way forward?

It's about bloody time wages went up and big companies/ farmers stopped taking advantage of economic migrants. It's hardly surprising people from this country don't want to work bloody hard doing back breaking work in the cold for minimum wage or less. If wages were appropriate people will do the work. When I went to Oz I rang five random companies and applied for one job vacancy. After one week i had 5 job offers all over £100 a day for a labourer. Here on the isle of wight you would be lucky to get minimum wage and are more likely to be offered minimum wage paid as cash.

from what I hear of the new rules on immigration the pay will have to be £30k + a year for your immigrants so one way or another the labour costs will go up.

You won't see plant hire change. The issue is not it's cost but the influx of money from other sources under the premise that if it earns more than being sat in the bank it's a success!

What will happen if rates increase is smaller jobs dropping off the radar.... which will affect smaller contractors more! Fortunately I am but a few years away from my escape plan being complete and likewise if it gets bad sooner I shall f**k off to university

they also have a much higher cost of living - wages match it ... and folks expect to have to pay proper money ... it's all relative

the cost of stuff is not that much more expensive (with the exception of drink) but tax is higher, working hours are shorter you are not allowed to work loads of over time. a lot of site work 4 x 10 hour days in the summer and 5 x 8 hour days in the winter

Im no economist but no matter what the country's model is its going to get tougher and tougher for it all to stack up as long as there are idle feckers about who think its 0K to be looked after by working people and fed by a system that isnt tough enough on them.

Not a PC thing to say and there are lots of genuinely disadvantaged people about but we seem short of a bit of natural selection

We need to get apprenticeships that pay a half decent wage to get our young people interested again and not pricing them out of the market by having to get them on all of these Citb cards for everything, The problem has been the wages being driven down by economic migrants coming over and British companies taking advantage of the low wages, while the wages are low you cannot get yongsters interestead in becoming operators , or taking things like Plumbing, Platering, Bricklaying etc. If wages were higher then you would but people like Charlie Mullins ( Pimlico Plumbers) is againt this as he likes his cheap eastern european labour which give him greater profit. A lot of companies are using loopholes to pay less than minimum wage which is incidently much higher here than it is in EU countries, They do not directly pay their staff they pay the money to an Eastern European employment agency which means they can pay below the UK min wage as there staff are agency, A few years back there were loads of youngsters doing these aprenteships as the prospects and money were good the last few years have Fu**ed this country, We need to get on a ditch the EU rules and regs including the new one which is due to come in where even if you have a piece of equipment on your own private property it has to be insured! How are they going to police that one! it's just common sense lets get on with it.
