Problem is the forums are always full of the issues, and not the motors that have covered north of 200k with little to no problems

I got the disco 4, I like it, will be 6years in the spring, nice comfortable plenty poke good turning circle blah blah all that but be prepared to payout between £800-£1000 every year for mot/maintenance work. Once you get your head round that and accept it then it's a good yoke. Although I'm considering changing mind for either the new disco or a Q7 🤔

I looked at a q7 earlier although was the first shape they are or at least look a fair bit smaller inside than the disco.
800-100 each year 🤯 what sort of stuff is going wrong on them?
To be fair have got off lightly most years with mot with only minor things needing sorting, until last year where the smax needed new front shocks, at just a tad over £500 (better than nearly 1k the local ford parts desk wanted, even though the parts still came direct from another main dealer bit through their eBay store 🤔) and set of rear bushes for £200 including the tool I had to buy

I do find that I often search for Disco Commercials but can’t justify adding another Land Rover on the drive. The Range Rover Sport is in the same maintenance league you have quoted as it is just a D3 in a different dress. I still prefer towing with the Iveco as the buckets on the trailer put me over weight. I also have the old faithfully D1 with a 300tdi which has been the tow vehicle for many years and still a firm favourite.

Glad I've never gone disco after reading those yearly figures. I think its bad enough if have to put a bulb in the hilux. To be fair it's had front shocks and a section of exhaust in the 6 years I've had it and could do with a clutch (previous owner) but it's over 100k miles so can't complain

My neighbour has a hilux and as much as he loves it.....it is as different as chalk and cheese from a disco! My best friend has a D5 commercial which he describes as a Range Rover with a van back end. We all have different requirements from our vehicles, that is why we have 5 (6 but I don’t count one that is still under repair) different vehicles here. I think as I get older I accept compromise less and would rather have several older vehicles for the job they are needed for rather than the compromise of having one newer that that is “all right” for all the jobs I do!

I assume Froggy still doesn't charge VED/road tax then ??
I'd agree, but it's a costly past time running several different vehicles here .... would much prefer to see the VED on fuel, as they have threatened for years ... could start a new collection again then :giggle::giggle:

Froggy....I might be over the border from you but not 2 borders. I am just down the the M50 near Tewkesbury and Gloucester!
The collection
Range Rover Sport - Known by my daughter Lara as The King Car. My personal transportation used for any done work trip, some work trips, some towing and continental travel.
Mercedes estate - known as the Princess car - used by my wife as the school run car after being replaced by the above.
Discovery 1 300tdi - purchased many years ago for one job which I needed to tow a large trailer. Became my car to use for most things apart from leaving the country!
Iveco tipper - joined the fleet when I took the disco over a weight bridge after having the Engcon fitted!
Range Rover Classic - purchased as a project to keep it from the scrap man - used on the farm only as the hay mover. With the rear seats out I can get 8 bales in the back and it goes everywhere! I will get this one road legal at some point!
The one waiting repair is a P38 which again is a project. Have had the engine rebuilt and now need a fuel injection pump.

she has never broken down with me, it’s just the extra wear and tear costs of running a heavy vehicle and nipping about in it like a car. Brakes, corroded brake lines, suspension bushes, a bit of wiring causing the reversing light to stay on. Also parts for Landrovers tend to be pricey for certain things coz they can get away with it. But it is a good super practical vehicle With not much out there to look at them for what they offer. Hence the reason I’ve had it so long and still not sure what to replace it with.

That's all liveable stuff, bushes can be a twat to change but generally fairly cheap. Did the smax rear trailing arms in polyflex was a bit dearer than generic ones but no risk of cheap parts failing, just a fit and forget situation

Best place for any defender right now is in a hedge.... It's a modern classic, but will take a few years to realise it's value.
