Log Grab for a JCB 8008 CTS Micro Digger

Hi everyone, my first post, my first digger.

Been using the digger for a week to excavate for a driveway. Later I'll need to unload and stack a few hundred concrete retaining wall blocks weighing approx 30kg each.

I've never used a log grab before.

Would a grab mounted on the JCB 8008 assist or is it just likely to damage the blocks too much?

depends whether tou have a touch like a bull elephant or not
don't want a log grab - the tynes over lap, although it is do-able , it's not as easy as a selectror grab
I have a little Haner on my 8015 which works very well, but it's not just a case of hanging it on the dipper - it needs a supply to operate it too:rolleyes:
not on my usual 'puter, or I'd put some pix up for you

I wouldn't get a selector grab either. You hire a proper probst kerb lifter for £50 a week. No plumping required either.

I don't think I have a quick hitch....

I've marked red where I think it should strap on, is this position okay? Would prefer to remove the bucket to reduce the weight, but I can't imagine where to strap it then.

It just hangs off a chain or strap from the quick hitch's lifting point
and would need a swivel in the set up somewhere .... either a swivel hook or a swivel link

Remove the bucket and get a hook that fits on the bottom pin is best option. The budget option is a strap through the pin hole.
going to struggle to find a shackle that'll span the dipper end eye though ... needs a U shaped lift point creating to shackle to :rolleyes:

difficult to tell from the pix, whether it's an 'auto latcher' or not ??

it’s only for an 8008 so you won’t have a massive lift height to work with. I’ve got a fairly thin 1t lifting strap I’ve used through the main pin hole on my e10 before. That might not work with yours as I think they’re only 25mm pins.

That's what I mean, you can buy lifting cradles that fit the dipper.

They are auto latching so the first time you take all weight off the lifting point of them the latch releases and it grabs the block. The second time you take all weight off the lifting point it re latches and stays spread.

Actually for use with a kerb lifter you want it with as little twist in it as possible. A strop hung between two points, say each side of the dipper, is ideal as it kind of self centres the grab. Then you get your position right as well as how you attach the grab, you might have to add a shackle to turn it on degrees, and you can work by yourself without having to have an assistant. Tales a bit of practice but is doable.

I was going to suggest the same. We used to build sleeper retaining walls using one.
The only thing is you need a mate to guide the blocks into place or you will take too long faffing about as the grab is free swinging.

When I lifted the Probst it stayed rigid and didn't grab unless I manually pulled the auto-latch lever first (circled in red in the photo). When I lowered it onto the ground it auto-releases okay, but to get it to grab again - it seems that I would need an assistant to pull the auto-latch lever first each time before lifting.

I decided not to complete the transaction.

Thinking about it later, maybe I could have attached a rope to the lever and looped it up the dipper arm so that I could pull the lever while sitting in the digger seat. I'm not sure if this is how it's meant to be operated as there was no hole or anything to grip the rope onto the end of the lever.

Honestly, you don't want to muck around with a bit of string. I'm sure you will find one with working auto latch.
Or a bit more money for a hydraulic one (this doesn't have hydraulic rotate. Just grab)

good make - not dear IMHDO ... could always fit a hydraulic rotator and a 6x2 diverter if only one service available
would go on a pallet and IIRC our Rory' (@JD450A ) is not that far away from Salt Ash, or Ben ( @Stroppymonkey ) either
