Adding a Temp gauge (to a log splitter)

I've got this log slitter: 13HP Chonda, 125mm diam ram, 50mm tow coupling, can swivel to operate vertical or horizontal - the usual sort of package.
It is, I have to say, bloody wonderful. I don't bother stacking logs anymore, I stack firewood.

Now all my timber is long grain hardwood, so when I fire up the splitter, it works for a living. As a result the the oil heats up, but I've never been sure how much - I've worked on the theory that if I can't leave my hand on the cylinder, it's time to let it cool off, but I thought it'd be nice to have a visual indicator, so I hunted down a stick-on type.

I haven't started it in a week, so it's just reading ambient.

Took me ages to find to find the strip without the jug.

I’ve seen them on race car brakes and other parts where temp was hard to monitor

Q. How do you tell an oral thermometer from an anal thermometer?

A. They taste different.

When I stuck the thermometer onto the cylinder, it was summer and the ambient temp was 38C (see pic above).

I tried a short session (20min) just now with an ambient of 18C and only got it upto 37C.
