Glendennings (a quarry firm local to us) refused to buy any European lorries right up till the mid 2000's, running a staple of fodens, ERFs and I believe a few Bedfords. One of the families older generation was a POW in Germany and apparently that's where that stemmed from.
I grew up near an old fella that survived the Burma railroad.
Only heard him tell the tale just before he passed on... unbelievable but that's another topic entirely.

Never ever would he entertain a jap car or any of his family even now.

Folk might call em pathetic and racist blah blah. I just say well his lads saw the scars on his back.

I’ve read a few books about those poor fuckers. The s**t they went through was completely on another level. None of the films do it any kind of justice. My gran (dead for 28 years) remembers seeing the POWs getting off the boats at Southhampton looking like skeletons, and that was AFTER they had weeks/months of care and food.

As a flip side to that, Friend of mine is part of the HBH Woollacots Dynasty (South west electrical goods retailers).
That was also founded by a POW, except this one was a German who was a POW in Bude :)
used to have a few customers (and/or their offspring), who were ex-POWs - one was fiercely proud of his Luftwaffe time as an ME109 pilot :giggle:
