Why aren’t prisoners in chain gangs picking up litter etc? One man and a rifle would be the only cost.

The can grow their own food whilst they’re at it also.
Remember being in Jamaica a good few years ago, they where building a new road.
Group of lads in orange boilersuits sitting fairly close together tieing wire in a new bridge ( the rest of the lads where just in shorts) then I noticed the lad with the AK47 watching them, it was a chain gang

people like Peter Sutcliffe cost us over a million quid a year to keep locked up -- there was no question of doubt with him and hundreds of others like him, draining resources - should all be 'offed' -- job done
have always said --- prison should be a place no one ever wants to go a second time -- it's a holiday camp for most who end up there regularly

the yanks have the right idea - treat 'em hard ....... and their three strikes and you're out - permanently is bang on - just remove the a-holes from society permanently and make their lives hell - chain gangs, hard labour, all are great ideas.
We will have to agree to disagree on this. There are a few people on the 3 strikes system that definitely should not be in prison (in US) There should be many more deterrents to low level crime that don't involve imprisonment. Prison itself is certainly a deterrent to most people, I know a couple of chaps that have done 6-12 month stints (one for growing a lot of weed, and one for an HGV fatality) and they would both tell you its by far the worst experience of their lives. Tagging / Curfews / monitored alcohol and/or drug abstinence / voting rights removed / travel rights removed / passports suspended / fines linked to income and assets etc etc. Huge amount of people in prison that could be on the outside still contributing to society rather than costing money being locked up. We need less people in prison not more.. the American model is certainly NOT one to emulate. If we are looking at other countries then the Scandinavian model is much more effective (and humane). I cant agree with the death penalty as that ends up costing more (check out the US figures) but certainly people that are dangerous to others need to be put away quietly for a long time (or ever) and kept away from society.

Humane for who?
The offender or the victims and potential victims ?

The trouble is though you have named two crimes.... One (growing weed) deserves prison, whatever your stance on weed Growing it for sale is a known crime and has a substantial negative impact on law abiding communities.

An HGV accident does not..... Although I suspect the circumstances will likely be either something was wrong with the wagon or the driver was on phone etc to of seen prison time.

I don't disagree with the 3 strikes rule..... If your enough of a twat to commit serious offences 3 times you don't deserve to be in society

Just starting with what is my busiest time of year when the temps start dropping. I’m very grateful to be busy given some peoples current work situation but there’s days where I just want to throw the phone at the wall when people expect you to drop everything for them.

Amen to that. Small bit of first frost yesterday. Seems like everyone of our 3000+ customers has decided that despite being reminded and chased all summer ...NOW is a good time to ask for the boiler to be serviced. We will be playing catchup till about March now. Same every year.

or 'summer specials'
That is more like it, but we are lucky enough to always have demand higher than supply (although this summer it felt like we were catching up!) We probably punch a bit higher on price during colder times for emergency boiler replacements for new customers, but try and treat all the regulars the same. Plenty of our customers go back over 20 years so cant take the piss.

Totally I always say look after the regulars before the new. Regulars don't shop around so much thus far less time wasted dead end quoting.
