Hi.

Just to let anyone interested know. I have finally bought a Kubota KX018-4. I got it for 18k on finance and it worked out to be the cheapest other than a Bobcat. The Bobcat 1.7 tonne was 17.5k, I also had quotes for Yanmar, Volvo, Wacker, JCB and CAT. They ranged between 19.6k and 21k.
I'd like to thank you all for all the advice as I think I've done the best thing by buying new. I'm planning on keeping it, but have seen 4 year old KX016 asking 16k. Even if I decided to sell after this project for a loss of 5k, then it would have been worth it.
Thanks again.

Is that inc VAT then? I hired a yanmar off a guy I know recently. He bought it and isn't vat reg. Seems a lot to lose but if the residuals fetch nearly vat money then no probs I suppose

I did hire out a 1.8 tonne machine for the day to see how it would perform. It was a 2009 JCB with 3500hrs. The machine was a piece of junk, the hydraulic pipe for the blade blew off within an hour and I had to carry on without it. The stability because of that was terrible, but I still managed to dig up 5 trees and move a lot of earth. I realised then, that a new machine would perform way better. I now know that hiring an 8 tonne for one week will be enough for the bulk of the work.

Plus Vat. I was told to setup a business as a digger/operator and then claim the Vat back. I'll advertise for work and I don't actually mind if I've got to do a days work here and there. I'm not actually going to do it to compete with others that do this for a living, just enough to warrant the business.

Nice work mate. Just remember that when you register for VAT, anything you do in a self employed capacity is then vat-able, even if not digger work.

you can re-claim vat on any qualifying purchases (tools, computers, vans etc) going back 7 years on your first return.

That's good to know. I was thinking of registering next year some time.
Thanks.

All I need now is to learn how to maintain the thing.
Well plenty of help on here and also YouTube if you start looking around, something along the lines of this should help, not the same machine as yours, but sure you get the idea🙂.

You wish!

From HMRC:
  • 4 years for goods you still have, or that were used to make other goods you still have
  • 6 months for services

Other issue is they do also try to reduce the value you can claim dependent on the use you have had with it before becoming vat reg.

Unfortunately, technically it's vat fraud so you should either become a business and do plant related work or just suck it up and pay the vat. HMRC will probably take a dim view (if your lucky) of someone starting a company to claim back vat on a digger for personal use plus with the latest crackdowns on vat fraud. If you register and then have a 4k reclaim a tax inspector WILL come knocking on your door
