Hi all
I am thinking of getting a loan to buy a transit tipper plant trailer and a mini digger to go into groundworks as having worked for big civils companies all my life I want to do my own thing I live in St Albans Hertfordshire I am looking for advice on insurance for equipment and public libliity and is there a good living to be made from this venture or am I totally off my head doing this any advice would be appreciated thanks

Not a great time to be doing all that on a loan with a recession oncoming.

It becomes a real race to the bottom in an economic slowdown. Plenty of people will go out with their mini for less after costs than you’ll be on working for a civils firm.

Doing your own thing is understandable…. But going from big civils to a one man band domestic setup is ENTIRELY different skill set.
I’d say go a work for a local landscaper or small scale groundworker for a couple years to get an idea of what’s involved .
If you have always been PAYE then go and take some business courses and get some experience and knowledge on running a small business.

My advice is go for it! Life is short,if you have the work ethic,ambition and energy then have a go! Start sensibly,borrow as little as you can to start,maybe just enough for the tipper and tools,wacker plate,mixer and electric breaker should get you going,hire diggers to begin with and be ready to work your nuts off ,it’s hard work,all consuming and not without financial risk but if you don’t have a go you never know ! Good luck.

Yeah id go along with that...its a fair ask but bottom line is if you're good enough and prepared to make sacrifice you'll do ok.
Is your significant other behind you ? makes a big différence
Or better still makes lots of money so you can have all the toys and endlessly mess about without it really stacking up
