What? I have about 5 hollys in a hedge that get smashed back by the hedge cutter every year!like swans -Queen'sKing's birds - dead ones are reportable and taking one is a no no - or their eggs

Nice but urgh please get yourself a thumb on that machine!Something moving in the woods! 23r and a narrow toothed bucket tearing through the holly scrub
Another day will have all the scrub piled then I can really assess what's what in there.
God knows when it'll be OK to have a bonfire thoughnoticeably cooler in the trees, really quite pleasant

I was nearly settled on a proper grab, right up until I got to this job for the first time, now I keep thinking how useful a thumb would be to pick stuff up as I'm tracking around doing bucket jobs
I suspect as normal the answer is one of each

I really am surprised you say that. (Or maybe not!) Because surely if your grubbing out bushes scrub/small trees the thumb and bucket get the little bucket under the roots to prise the out and then just shift out the way with thumb. Whenever I'm clearing scrub I'd always choose the thumb over the grab. Plus raking and clearing brash up can get way more brash in a thumb and grab them I can get in to the grab.

Yeah you do need both but if I only had to have one.... The thing about a thumb is it's only 2 pins to pull if you want it off. The only negative really is the fact you have to weld on to a dipper- especially when it's all new and shiny!Thumb or grab Thumb or grab Thumb or grab though

I should just jump in and buy a thumb for it, it's not exactly expensive in the grand scheme

Is the 23r off a pedal or joystick roller. If on a pedal a thumb is less arduous because you can just flick the thumb out roughly to where you need it and do any thing delicate with the bucket curl whereas grab is like tap dancing on a pedal!Nothing new or shiny about my 23r

That's my thinking, this job I did yesterday yes about 3/4s of them would have pulled straight out with a grab but there were plenty I had to dig out like conventional stumps
So with a grab I'd either have been changing over every 5 minutes or saving up all the digging out ones for the end?
Now if I was just there to clear/burn the pile, or for timber stacking/chipper feeding type work, yes, a grab is clearly better in every way. But for a mixed job, bit of piling up, stump removal, flattening ruts, clearing ditches then a thumb seems far more sensible. What you loose on the manoeuvrability you gain on being able to grip things at any time?
One of each is clearly the answer, but thumb first I think

Not really today’s job as such. Taking a week off work for the wife’s 50th. Off to Belgium for a weeks cycling/sight seeing. First ever time on the EuroStar yesterday.. impressed TBH, took less time to get from London to Brussels than it did to get from Exeter to London.
Cycled 40 odd miles today and we were sharing space with cars for virtually none of it.. they really have it geared up differently to the UK here.
Noticed that every building site has its own crane. I’ve only seen one Telehandler all day. In Brussels lots of Ducks.. most with tilty or tilt rotate.
Lots of kit left beside the road with no security.. couldn’t do that in UK.

tha's no cloud - that's a hanging 'vapour trail' .... had loads of 'em over us this morning - there for a few hours with little wind to disperse them --- cool pic though Alex .. and some nice gardening - gonna make 'gardener's world' jealous
