Originally I was going to order this one : https://vicaryplant.com/products/motor-starter-714-40159?_pos=1&_sid=acbf33b8a&_ss=r but was told that for an extra £10 this one had more torque and so this is what I have ordered : https://vicaryplant.com/products/motor-starter-714-40531?_pos=1&_sid=901aa3376&_ss=r I have also been told that because the latter is shorter than the first one it is easier to fit.Which starter did you order?
Without a doubt, the costlier reduction-drive type is well worth the price.
Wow, did I actually do something right for a change£10 well spent.
They are smaller, lighter, easier to fit and they spin the engine faster.
That's a bit worrying ! The V5 says first registered 01/11/2003. and that I acquired it on 23/03/2007 !
Is this your machine, serial no points to a 1993 machine over a 2003?
Either way the blue relays are the same, so if starter still plays up just pull the corresponding one out and see if it stops the starter.
Oh damn, you are right. Date of 1st Reg. is 01/11/2003. Thank you for your continued help.Ah yes deffo a p8, I think they went up to 1995/1996 before going into a p12..
yours probably just got road reg in 2003 not actually made then!
Now this is going to sound really very stupid but when you mention relays are they in the fuse box or elsewhere ?

those 'hi-energy reductions' don't last anywhere near as long as 'a beast' thoughWhich starter did you order?

Just box. On a p8 they are near the seat under the side dash.. (hopefully!)Now this is going to sound really very stupid but when you mention relays are they in the fuse box or elsewhere ?
Thank you again for that. I printed your version out in A3 rhis afternoon and it is much clearer. Are any of the cables colour coded ?I uploaded a better copy to: https://www.classicmachinery.net/forum/app.php/dl_ext/?cat=5&sort_by=0&order=ASC&start=4
See if that helps.
Thanks again for your help. I'll have a look tomorrow and see what I can find. I've had to go into the fuse bos a few times but that is under the front dash on the RH side as you know.Just box. On a p8 they are near the seat under the side dash.. (hopefully!)
Yes - they are yellow! (all of the wires are yellow). Are any of the cables colour coded ?
yeh -- JCB like yellow wire - A LOTYes - they are yellow! (all of the wires are yellow).
It's not that bad though - each wire is numbered, so its exact function can be identified.
From the diagram below, 810 and 815 will be printed on those wires.
Suggestion - take a pic of the fuse/relay box before you start pulling anything. The Blue and Green relays are not interchangable.

Thank you for that information. I will indeed take a photo. before I move anything. I find that because of my awful memory loss these days I have to do that prior to taking anything apart. I used to have a brilliant memory but as I've grown older, certainly since I passed 75 a few years ago, it is awful now. Except of course for silly things like vehicle registrations from 60 years ago.Yes - they are yellow! (all of the wires are yellow).

They are quite keen on yellow paint as well.yeh -- JCB like yellow wire - A LOT![]()
shame they don't know how to apply it, so that it actually stays putThey are quite keen on yellow paint as well.
Or the starter is full of brush debris is finding hard to turn, i would probably take it apart and clean it firstNext time you go to start it, get someone to give the solenoid on the starter a smack with a hammer while your turning it over, there’s a good chance it might persuade it to engage!
I've never thought that was a problem on all my JCBs but then I've never had a new one.shame they don't know how to apply it, so that it actually stays put![]()
