I’ve got an angled headstock on the old Rototilt (ie Cranab) grab on the 6 tonner - that’s how Rototilt supply them. Gives you a horizontal grab at ground level for ragging out stems/shrubs when oriented the right way around.

I had a hitch like that ready. But I guess you’re still having to compensate with tilt as you rotate, as well as switch from tilt to grab. And the grab on the tilt divert and most likely also the worm drive rotator will be slower than a dedicated rotator. It’s amazing how quick I can pull and windrow scrub with a grab a rotator- and also how much of it I have to do!

Rightly or wrongly I was seeking to recreate the setup I have on the e27 that works superbly. Grab/rotator combo under quick hitch, and tilty under quick hitch when required for bucket work. Breakers, rippers, bulking buckets all under quick hitch no tilty.

The plan was always to have both- I’ve just ended up getting them in the other order than envisaged! Need to get this machine out and earning some money.

So if anyone spies a secondhand s45 top/bottom four pipe titly, let me know!

I'd like a few more jobs like this, actually using a machine for more than 5 minutesat a time . Dig out and lay road planings for a semi temporary driveway for one of my best customers - their 3rd house in 5 years,

only issue would be a lack of tilt to one side

I thought that when I went to measure up, but the parking area out the back is actually a bottleneck pain to use, This really does make sense for the next couple of years when there are bound to be vans there most days.

Some fencing which I finally managed to get done after the ground thawed out. Hand dig as no way was a post knocker getting through the old yard build up of everything you can imagine! - and keeping it straight!

Tis the only way to get sawn post and rail true without the 5x3s post twisting in awful ground. See these lovely post and rail jobs where it was all knocked in but always nice loamy soils!

Yeah but still ground dependant- they work if it's just variations of soil Your not going to twist a post if it's sliding down A side of a large root or boulder no matter how much you twist it it will just spring back or snap. A fencing contractor I have been working for has all that kind of thing on one of his tracked machines but has to be the right ground to be effective.

You’d of got away with it on half of it.. most of them holes I was pulling out half concrete blocks etc which the previous farmer had dumped before concreting over it all. Thankfully levels are being built up not down!

Thanks! They're going to concrete the entrance and drive too, became a right claggy mess after my works- don't think the farm has been touched for several decades before they bought it so nice to see the place brought back to life.

It doesn’t impede anything - no fouling at any angle. It works really well - rotates and grabs fast, and will hold the world (you’ll tip the digger over before it lets go!).

Never really thought about it like that - in use it just works. The twisty tilty bit sort of just ‘happens’ (and I’m definitely not any sort of mega-operator) and the grab always ends up in the right ‘plane’ - using traditional hydraulic selector grabs etc on other machines feels really numb when I use them after my tilty.

Just a quick update.
Given that this machine trails a power cable behind itself I’ve decided to stick with a cable to remote control it as I have that working already. The focus now is making things to go on the end of the arm.

If this prototype works the next model will be diesel powered so the quest for a radio control system will resume.
