We went for slate. Ex snooker table
The bit I had in the kiln was put inside for 6months before its final resting place, couldn’t believe how much it moved in that time! That's what I was thinking. Timber That's been out side with move if it comes into a central heated house

My Dad found a half size pool table when i was a kid, in a skip, took it for the slate. I ended buying a set of balls and making new pockets with old dishwasher tablet netsCheap way to buy slate if you know !

It was perfect sized for putting on the dining table, only problem was it had a 10p sized divot by one of the middle pockets- hit that and the ball could spin out in any direction. Local rules!![]()

10x4?!coach screw some BIG steel stringers/stretchers to the back of it Dan - make some slit tee out of some 10 x 4 UB -- they'd hold it with enough screws![]()
I bought one a fair while ago - was cheap...cheeky fecker forgot to mention it was upstairs !I have a decent pool table in the back of my lockup.. will be forsale when everything infront of it is sorted through![]()
Be better off ripping into narrower boards and alternate the medullary rings then glue back togetherI think it is a stenner, yes.
I’m hoping to get a large single-board worktop for a kitchen island in our new extension, but might swap it for a piece of something he’s had cut/stacked for a few years to reduce the risk of it cupping.
10" x 4" UB slit in the centre web will give you a 5" x 4" tee Dan -- real stiff but fairly light and relatively easy to incorporate into yer island build10x4?!
That’s a great shout, I had been contemplating bolting something to it underneath - will come up with some way of incorporating this idea into the build.
lot of work though and it's no longer the one complete original board - is the way to minimise deformity thoughBe better off ripping into narrower boards and alternate the medullary rings then glue back together
Might as well just buy a pre-made worktop if doing that (though I agree with you in principle) - I’m hoping to have something pretty unique (a 4 foot wide single-piece slab of oak would be a pretty interesting feature imo).Be better off ripping into narrower boards and alternate the medullary rings then glue back together
Find someone with a kiln who knows their stuff and don't mill too thin....any things do-able10x4?!

Would look great tbf.Might as well just buy a pre-made worktop if doing that (though I agree with you in principle) - I’m hoping to have something pretty unique (a 4 foot wide single-piece slab of oak would be a pretty interesting feature imo).
well you could get a Tee slot cutter and slide some 51 x 51 Tee into it, but don't think it'd be strong enough TBHWould look great tbf.
What about T slot in the underside if it is thick enough, wonder if you can get a dovetail shaped steel section @V8Druid ?
Some poxy off the shelf chipboard kitchen units with the mandatory cupboards/drawers/wine fridge bollocks of the modern day island. But it gives me the option of adding reinforcement within the design - it’s all in the ‘ideas’ stage at the moment but the input here aligns with my thoughts and has definitely inspired! What base are you thinking of having under it? I used to deliver custom made vintage industrial tables for my ex’s parents. Their main tops were American oak iirc but they also made bases for customer supplied tops. Most went to London, my favourite place to deliver
