Totally agree with regard to the air filter, just not stopping the fine stuff going into the carb.Sure looks like the air filter isn't doing its job.
I know the MS170 is built to a price, but the air filter pad really looks like a weak spot.
Apparently the 171 and 181 use a flock filter similar to the bigger saws.
know that feeling well -- but usually mid use with that bloody gauze that keeps blocking in my 028Totally agree with regard to the air filter, just not stopping the fine stuff going into the carb.
Might try buying a genuine filter to see if that helps.
Other than that it means a good clean after use to keep it ticking over nicely, and I’m getting pretty good at it now![]()
I think you might have the wrong filter looking at the witness marks on the fabric - LS Engineers show 2 different versions, and they are only very cheap. I’d personally buy both and see which fits best. So, it lasted longer than before but ended up full of very fine dust again resulting in bogging down under load.
Stripped cleaned and running as it should.
Surely it shouldn’t block up this quick?
Am I missing something from the air filter area that’s allowing all the dust in?
Should there be 2 parts to the filter?

Let me help you with that.Just waiting for the new oil pump and then I can see if it’s a keeper or not.
I actually find it ok when it’s running right, light enough to handle and the chain is big enough for my needs.Let me help you with that.
It’s a dog of a saw. The vibes are horrible and they eat oil pumps for fun!
You will really notice less vibes on a 135
