Need a spreader beam

I need something like this


I need it for the manhole box we bought last week, do I attempt my own and put money towards a welder or buy off the shelf?
I need the beam above the forks as need all the height I can get

If make own what size steel do you think would be req?

Mh box is about 550kg but need to take into account any material that maybe around it.

The beam can be utilised for tank install too.

Did wonder about beam clamps on an rsj too

I thought beam clamps were no longer a compliant lifting solution ? (According to a crane guy I know)

Probably cheapest to just buy one , then next year get it Loler along with your other kit .

Yeah another grand gone though wasn't expecting to buy that box last week but didn't trust the ground

Do you excavate around the box before removal or just pull it out of the ground? I’d imagine the ‘stiction’ would add a huge amount to the actual weight when getting it started?

If you put a 3m beam with a centre support and 500kg load each end into here


Take the results and cross reference into this table


It would give you the beam size

Would just need to decide your safety factor

easy solution ... but .. getting any compliance testing/paperwork will be so so ... would get your box out though and finding the right tester, you ought to be able to get it cert.ed at varying lengths/lift points .. bit of 178 x 102 UB (7" x 4") ought to do what you want with a huge margin ... point loading over 2m would be 5.3t ... over 2.5m - 4.25t ... over 3m - 3.55t .. over 3.5m - 3.05t ... over 4m - 2.65t ;):giggle:(y) -- if you weld some box sleeves under it to locate on the forks DO NOT weld across the beams flanges .. weld along the edges of the flange ;)

are you talking about lifting beams with a clamp or lifting off a beam with a clamp ... they're damned near idiot proof if hung off level beam for a lift point

I have a couple of QR lift points/clamps and impossible to get off without first removing the load completely ... will get a pic tomorrow

I thought I was talking about lifting steel frame buildings with clamps. Spider crane operator reckoned that it needed to be done from shackles through holes in steel, and it was a PITA if you started bolting bits together on the ground and then lifting as the balance was all wrong. He may have been spouting bollocks or I may have been mistaken.

I thought I was talking about lifting steel frame buildings with clamps. Spider crane operator reckoned that it needed to be done from shackles through holes in steel, and it was a PITA if you started bolting bits together on the ground and then lifting as the balance was all wrong. He may have been spouting bollocks or I may have been mistaken.
I hired a big telehandler off the bloke who made my shed steelwork as mine wasn’t big enough to lift the rafters up.
When I asked him how he would recommend slinging the rafters he laughed and said they lift them up into position on the forks(!!!!).
I slung them….

When I was on the houses many moons ago a telehandler was a luxury, usually up to the roof by hand, no fall arrest when nailing binders with hammer and 3 inch roundhead nails, 1 leg wrapped around the truss on the apex and that was it. Yet ahole site agents wanted you to wear a hard hat, had many an argument and won everyone, cocks
