What would you take

Imagine your heading off on a bit of extended traveling...off the beaten track somewhat and need a vehicle you can sleep/live in and is reasonably capable off road, fixable within reason, no adblue/limp mode electronic shite that could land you in bother etc what vehicle setup would you choose and why ?

Has to be sensible price - limit say 40k ish

Understressed Mercedes diesel with parts available everywhere, the ex N.A.T.O. troop carriers must crop up all over the place.
A very capable small truck without all the complications of their bigger brothers.
I'm out of touch with what they go for now, certainly used to be really good value

Land Cruiser for sure. 4L straight six engine.

I put best part of 200k miles on one doing all sorts from towing, racing up and down motorways and driving in -20c in a Norwegian winter.

Never had a spot of bother. Just routine servicing.

Off the beaten track...how off?
This will be the deciding factor.

For comfort a converted 4x4 sprinter mod will take some beating ... reliability will be a question.

For shear capability you'll struggle to beat a land cruiser/Hilux setup with rooftop tent and bang fir the buck this wins imo.

Aussies have in nailed imo. Watch 4wd247 on YouTube for ideas. The best overland gear is generally Aussie stuff.

My current rig will get me most places in Europe these days ..once you go south morroco etc you'll need to start getting serious.

They fetch top money but would leave room to kit out ect

Yes, But you'll generally get away with some painting. The plus side is there are a lot of both of those wagons in Africa in particular. Parts are easy to find

What about a 4wd tranny/sprinter? The thing with all the land cruiser/Hilux/landrover setups is it's very restricted space and headroom- great in Oz or areas where severe offroading capabilities are requires but a proper van where you can stand up and turn round makes things more pleasant if your going for any length of time- just depends how odd road your planning on going
