I have an ifor trailer with a 13pin plug and a convertor to 7 pin the 13 pin seems to be sealed but had 2 thick cables going into it as i only need the basic tail/brake and indicators will one of the 2 cables going into the 13 pin be the old type 7 pin ie if i cut the cables can i just put a 7 pin on for the basics as there seems to be a problem in the 13 pin (corrosion} as the socket on vehicle working ok
many thanks

The 7 to 13pin converters always give grief. So check it's not the converter beforehand. Try it on another trailer ect.

I don't buy the converter any more but made my own lead up 13pin one end 7 other...no more dodgy lights.

If you do get rid of the 13pin socket for a 7 then yes, it's doable. I think the only wire not used would be the reverse light feed.

I was thinking about this the other day whether to upgrade to 13pin when I rewire the trailer after it's galvanised only extra wire that would be useful is one for charging the trailer battery for the winch

Also a reverse light on 13 pin
You also what a split charge for the trailer battery, otherwise you'll potentially need to unplug the trailer when using the winch or tilt, as it can try to draw power from the tow vehicle which will fry the wiring

Or I could put a relay off the on switch on the trailer so it disconnects the vehicle when I'm using the winch or tilt that way I don't have to switch the vehicle off

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
Can you put a separate Anderson connector for the winch?
The trailer will have its own battery Matt, being charged off the car's alternator when connected with a split charge... but run the risk of drawing BIG current if the tip/winch is operated whilst still connected to the car on the charge circuit ... as the OP says a relay to disconnect the incoming charge lead when the tip/winch is turned on to operate'd be an easy solution

Split charge relay should sort that without needing an additional relay

Yes trailer has its own battery it even has a built in 240v charger with an external kettle type socket to charge it up when in the yard all housed in a DeWalt tough box so fully waterproof
