Afternoon,

I need a battery for my 3CX, can anyone recommend? I'm used to buying batteries for alot of vans and cars and they're ok as long as they're in use... but as soon as anything sits for a bit - they die. But I always buy on price for these particular things.

The JCB doesn't get alot of use, so need a decent battery that will last... there's no leccy in the barn it lives in, so need something that can sit for a while without a need to charge. I can put it on an extension from time to time, but need something a bit hardy that can go months without charging.

fit a battery isolator ... and make sure you use it ....
my Hydrema sits for months sometimes and always fires first flick ....
the Zetor likewise, but a slower starter ...
has a monster 12v on it that you won't fit in a JakieB ... 630 - 110AH 1000 CCA
had a pair of Lucas off Batterybay seller on ebay in 2016 and still going strong - can't see any listings for them ATM though and over a year since they had any feedback so assume they've 'gone' :( ... they were JakieB size

A tip for battery tools they run down self drain, remove the battery it holds its charge, JCB either put an isolator on the live or disconnect and put away, that means some pikey that comes to steal it has to go and get a battery and find the isolator, plenty of sparks months later to fire the digger up,

you will need an isolator suitable for the loading if you do .... bang an isolator on the -ve side ... plenty available cheaply / sensible prices .. +ve isolators are usually expensive items

Bought it as winch battery. Lasts for ages.
Just stuck it on charge tonight and reminded me
Use it for all sorts. Made jump lead set etc

Thanks for the advise folks. Battery isolator switch is a good shout... have to admit I didn't think the old thing would be draining itself.

@V8Druid - thanks for the recommendation, I reckon that looks good for the job... Tayna have in stock. (y)

@JerryRtilt - I have got a solar charger (great bit of kit), but the barn this sits in is a rickety old asbestos affair - getting the panel outside, for the right bit of sun... could be probelmatic.

@Lancs Lad - Optima batteries!.... feck me, haven't seen them since the MaxPower boys with big car stereos in the 90's!! :love:

Batteries are cheap from Halfords with a trade card, and they do some with a 5 year warranty. I’m not saying you should buy one of those and swap it at 4 years and 11 months by the way, I’m just letting you know!

I always buy batteries from Halfords, the higher spec. With the 5 year warranty, very much a believer in you get what you pay for with batteries. Haven’t had to replace one yet. They have always had the size I’ve wanted in stock and handy to pick up with long opening hours 👍

dare I ask what sort of saving was to be had from Tayna ..... having praised the Lucas ones on the 'Drema, they're bound to go south shortly :rolleyes::(

The Exide was £105+VAT + carriage (pallet split on some others too).

I avoid buying stuff off ebay if I can help it, some sellers are a nightmare to get VAT receipts off and by the time I realise it's missing... I'm 3 months down the road and what appeared a good deal, suddenly turns out more expensive.

I always got my 3cx batteries from the JCB dealers, they were always much cheaper than anyone else, never had any problems and outlasted the warrenty, current one is 8 years and going strong.

They are very low-tech
The two sides overlap with an insulator between them. Loosen the knob (bolt) and there is an air-gap. Tighten it to make contact.
They are not really a substitute for a "real" battery isolator, but will help diagnose a parasitic drain and slow down a thief.
