Hi guys.
I'm having some issues with my minidigger engine.
Starts good if I keep the glow plugs for about 10sec, has power, but I get grey/white smoke when I rev it up.
I've checked the compression, looks good.
Gives a bit of s**t smoke through breather pipe.
What could be the issue?
It runs OK but I don't like those gases around.

greyish or white smoke could be unburnt diesel does it smell or irritate your eyes thats a sign of unburnt fuel if its breathing a lot it could be down on compression and has a bit of blow by, is the oil black in sump and is the cooling system water normal , not oily or blackish grey. the engine is probably a little tired/worn i would suspect. but it could be any number of things.

It has a bad smell. I was thinking that might be a problem with the injection timing.
Find attached the compression tests on each cylinder.

i think your readings should be more equal are the two that are lower adjacent it could possibly be a small leak on headgasket between them that would explain the grey stinky smoke maybe.

That's a good thinking. I never thought about a leak by the head gasket

not easy to do you may be able to remove the rocker gear then pressurise one cylinder with a gauge on the other one and see if the pressure rises but generally if you suspect the head gasket its probably as well to renew the gasket, there are probably other ways to check but its many years since ilast did anything like that did your pressure gauge go in the heater plug holes when you checked compressions, you would need to make a lot of pressure to be able to check if there is leakage from cylinder to cylinder and ensure that the valves on both were closed, how many hours has the engine got on it. may be easier to try and source another engine , all depends on how much you can do yourself i have not had much to do with that engine but have used jcb mini diggers with that engine all have been ok no starting or smoking issues on any that springs to mind. someone else may have better knowledge on them and know about any weakness they may have or not.

Ok I did use to find with many little Perkins that the injector nozzles and seats would not close properly all the time, had to be stripped and cleaned.

I have two of those engines both with scored centre cylinder bore.
It may just be coincidental that they both have the same problem or could it be some sort of a trend.

Has anyone else seen this on these engines?

I’d love to know how that happened. More common for 1 or 3 to be scored, usually after the machine has been on its side. Have the engines been cooked?

I don’t know the history of either of them.
I picked one up because I wanted the crank out of it to replace a broken one. Then the second one fell into my lap for beer money so I took it just in case I need an alternator or water pump etc. as the first parts engine was a bare block with no ancillaries.

Am I the only one thinking those compression readings are quite low for a diesel? Like others have suggested the headgasket might not be a bad shout? I'd have expected nearer 400psi. Heck I'll check the actual spec and update it here.

Yep as I suspected, you are a fair way out on your compression specs...
