pretty sh1t job if the thread on the end of that rod was ****ed in the time you've owned it DoobThen the steering died! Called m1, most likely the ram thread. No time to wait for their service guy so first thing this morning I pulled it and got it back to the warm of the workshop. By god it was cold. No way I could be a mechanic in one of those frozen mines!
Convinced it to go back over the last three threads. Grooved it out for weld. Degreased and applied loctite 641. Reassembled and welded, then ground flat to about where the stick out was prior. Fingers crossed…
All they were going to go was get it welded so the loctite is a bonus. At least it’s only a ram.

poor manufacturing'd be my first guess ... under/over size threading on rod and/or piston, producing a loose thread contacting on just the ridge of the cut, rather than the whole face and maybe a lack of a through pin or grub screw wouldn't helpWhat could cause it?
You don’t think the extra leverage from the boom and working it hard could cause it? It takes a lot more punishment than a dumper of the same size! whatever it is/was, they need to be sending you a new one, as that one is clearly not fit for purpose/up to spec. (TBH I'd go to the trouble of stripping and checking a new one for 'thread wobble' ) and if there is any - straight back - QC is not up to the job and you will be having the exact same issue again soon .... if they can't supply a well made unit, get them to agree to paying for one made properly.... let's hope the rest of the rams are up to spec. and that that is just a poor one off

if the threads are correctly machined and ideally a lock screw, or through pin installed, it should not occur .... should be no movement in the threads to enable wear whatsoever ... a 'wobbly thread', from over size nut or undersize rod will make it fail prematurely as, as said the threads are only bearing on the peak of the cut thread and not the whole face as intended/designed to ... no way should you have had that sort of failure with the period of time you have owned it.You don’t think the extra leverage from the boom and working it hard could cause it? It had a good chamfer on the ram and a matching one on the gland- went back together tight on the remaining threads.
Yes. They said they’d get the local guy to weld it, but he wasn’t answering the phone so I sorted it.Did they diagnose the problem quickly over the phone? (Ie are you not the first to experience this issue?)

They’re sending me a new one. Tried to say that it was down to abuse, but I said it never happens on a site dumper (which commonly has retards driving) does it? Then sent them a link to this thread and @V8Druid s comments.
I don’t want to be the sort that threatens trial by social media but what else can you do these days? I’m the first to sing it’s praises, it’s a bloody brilliant machine but it’s had an awful lot go wrong with it that just shouldn’t.
Anyway for tomorrow I’ve just welded the gland both sides. Won’t move now but it will most likely contact the weld at the end of the stroke, which long term would lead to bits flaking off.
