If I were to move to Scotland, where to?

As the title.
I'd still need to work for at least 10 years health permitting.
Joiner by trade all equipment could go. Want to be semi rural but still be able to earn.
Any advice, recommendations etc
Have you been anywhere up here yet ?
I’m in the highlands , moved here 24 years ago . I’m north of inverness but close enough to access the benefits of the city(all be it a very small one) for materials etc . Where I am if you’ll do a days work you will do fine . We get more sun than the west coast and less midges ! Locally the folk are really friendly . It’s a great place to live .
If you’re considering this area come up for a look and I can show you about .
Joiners always in demand here as all houses are timber frame so the majority of the building work is joiner based .
I wouldn’t rush to get rid of the equipment either .
You’d be wise to take it with you and sell what you’re not going to use once you’ve got a feel for the work .

Watching this one with interest...and SNP been booted out as a bonus .
I know you have no time for the SNP but the reason they get voted for goes beyond folk just being patriotic. The Tory’s hate Scotland . They don’t have any seats here so they don’t give a Feck for the place . So the options are vote for scottish labour which gives seats to keir Starmer and no way I can do that or Lib Dem who historically used to do ok here but it’s a wasted vote now or SNP who actually have some clout . Ironically though I can’t bring myself to vote for the SNP with Hamsa useless at the helm as under the SNP waiting lists are horrendous and our roads are awful and they have failed to deliver Dualling the A9 which has been promised for years . I’ve taken an interest in politics all my life but I’ve never felt so unrepresented as I do at the moment .

Your feeling of being unrepresented is what rather a lot feel like below the border!! I have come to the opinion that you should do what you can to try and enjoy what you have before some political twat tries to tax it or take it!!

Couldn’t agree more . We are being forced to accept changes in the way we live that only seem to affect financially the working class, whilst we hear of billions being spent and wasted by our government and councils all over the place . Meanwhile the basic things that we expect our governments and councils to do are not being done. They need to get back to basics first , provide good care for our elderly , provide good health care for the population , police the nation properly , maintain the roads network , get affordable public transport sorted , get our basic services industries working for the country not just for share holders .

If it weren’t for the midges we saw some mega places when we did 4 weeks in camper van in 2020, Isle of Mull was my favourite though. My auntie moved up 8 years ago and lives on Lewis, for the 900k semi in Sheffield reckon we could get a good place but chances of my mrs moving that far from kids is slim. Trying to talk her into a rural holiday home in northern Spain of southern France

Yes sort of nc500 but more as we were up for 9 days 2 years ago. Also Ayr area for a weekend and few visits to Edinburgh and Glasgow over the years.
Don't want to go back to carpentry and joinery , definitely not all

Been pretty lucky with the midges apart from the 1 area we stayed

At my stage in life probably the central belt or Aberdeenshire, later in life I’d retire to the outer Hebrides, probably Uist or Benbecula

What's the reason for moving north?
I realise everyone knows being Scottish is a preferred nationality 🙃 but what is the deciding factors for making a move.

Leisure activities .
Lifestyle.
People.
Family.
Tried everywhere else.
Hiding from loneshark.

Might give us a idea of where suits better.

Love the scenery, like the outdoors, better value property.
Less people, although I've been warned off by my mate who's worked offshore for years that those Scottish guys are a strange breed 😆

I reguarly stay in the Premier Inn at Elgin. Always stacked full of workers, so there must be plenty going on locally if the residents can't service the work. Very nice area, especially like Findhorn with its lovely sandy beaches and seaside vibe. Easy distance of Inverness as well.
Obvously I don't live there, but to me it seems a much nicer area than Edinburgh/Glasgow and nicer people. I've never had a problem being English there, but have had issues in the Edinburgh/Glasgow area around the last referendum.

There's not many hotels in Elgin so the premier inn is always busy 😄
