What are people paying for Tarmac?

Hi

Taking quite a few jobs on recently with driveways people are requesting soldier course with sets they choose and filling the centre with tarmac.
I don’t do tarmac never tried to and in all fairness don’t want to. I do all the prep work so when they turn up all they are doing is putting 50mm of 20mm base coat down then 30mm of 6mm topcoat (Domestic drives).

Does anyone on here do their own tarmac / or get subbies in? I’m paying £35 m2 for them to tar it. I’m in maryport Cumbria so I know pricing will be different depending on location but can’t be a million miles away.

The company I’m using is a highways approved contractor and there work is top notch so not complaining just looking for the difference in prices so I can see if I’m paying too much or not enough.

Last one I had was £23.86plus vat per m2 , based on 150m2 , 50mm of AC 20mm base and 25/30mm of AC 6mm topping , and that’s by a good set of guys. Was 12months ago but prices haven’t moved that much since then.

This is only 57m2 so it’s only £7 difference considering it’s 100m2 smaller and different parts of the country I’m happy with the price the quality of the work is perfect

I don't do much tarmac work but need to reinstate a trench on a job coming up.

It's a council depot with mostly HGV traffic, what spec is recommended for this?

I was planning for 150-200mm thick reinforced concrete base then tarmac on top - my guess would have been 50-100mm thickness.

Out of 2 quotes I've got one firm quoting for 3 layers tarmac @ 225mm total, and another firm saying 35mm will be plenty

Do what the council do, use a bit of cold tar or cut back, and whack it with the back of a shovel, or a quality job rear wheels of the van

Think that's what I did last time we did a road crossing

This is what the first firm have suggested but also with 125mm base underneath despite me pointing out the concrete base.

Ironically they are asking less for the 65/35 than two other firms are asking for 35mm only.

Depends if you’re planning on getting back to the ducts again oneday can just fill sand the ducts and foam the lot!

I was told by a highways bod that they won't allow foamed concrete anymore as they've had so much trouble with damaged drains getting filled and not coming to light until storms come ..... with the inevitable flooding

No spec until they come to sign it off and say the spec is wrong….

We do a lot for the local authority.the best we have found in terms of speed and cost is dry lean packed around ducts or pipes the continue with dry lean but compacted, best doing a wide enough trench to fit a 300mm Wacker plate in, leaves a better finish than a trench compactor. Water the last layer with a rose on the watering can. Leave for a day and tarmac 30-40mm wearing course. This leaves the ducts able to be excavated at a later date but a far better reinstatement than type 1. And you don't need a base course so cuts down that cost.
Type 1 reinstatement require a perfect trench for a perfect reinstatement. I have yet to come across a perfect trench in the highway, almost always filled with some sort of crap underneath.
If you want to go really over the top 50mm hotroll and chip but takes a bit of practice to lay. Whereas 10mm AC dence is hard to muck up especially if you have a decent Wacker plate on site.



And btw if it is council then they will be working to a standard hauc spec for reinstatement available here. This is the minimum spec so a full concrete reinstatement trumps it
